“A Must Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

We stayed at Au Temps des Charises for three nights in September (I suspect we were the Australian couple discussed in "Rural Perfection"). This place is a real eye opener for the quality and comfort of our stay. Our room was modern, clean and had good quality complimentary WiFi. Francoise is an amazing host who exudes warmth and charm (she speaks only French although this did not seem to cause any difficulty with other English only speaking guests - her hand signals are good!). Her meals are perfect and delicious.

The Jumieges location just a little away from the actual town centre is good if used as a base (as we did) for the area where there is so much to see. It is very handy for local eateries.

Well worth the stay and we will most definitely come again.

We overnight-ed at this most excellent establishment, and would gladly have stayed longer.

On arrival after a fairly long day's drive we were greeted warmly by Francoise, shown to our very nice looking room, and, before we knew it, established in the garden with a bottle of home brewed cider - this is Normandy, after all.

The room was of a decent size, comfortable, pleasantly decorated and furnished, and with good en suite facilities, including a good shower.

We took a walk into the hinterland, before the evening meal. This is a very pleasant part of France.

The evening meal, served at a communal table, was memorable.
Francoise enjoys cooking, and it shows.
I don't really like courgettes, but when they are served, as a starter, cooked with Camembert plus a little Emmental - give me more!
And the rest of the meal was superb.
Very tender duckling as a main course, and pancakes with caramelised apple as a sweet. Mmmm!

The other guests were an Australian couple, and a young Dutch couple whose car looked as though they were a Rock Group advertising themselves. In fact they were Scout organisers, advertising a charity event.
It was a very interesting, and enjoyable, evening.

Any reader who might have doubts about being put on a table with total strangers should put their hesitation aside. We have done this many times in Chambres des Hotes, and have never been disappointed.

The pricing, here, was all-in.
All drinks were included, including a glass of 'Calva'.
Fortunately this was a small glass. It seems that 'Calva' is related, probably illegally, to Calvados. Interesting!

We arrived in Jumiege from the West and had wondered whether to make a detour to avoid the ferry over the Seine.
We had decided to 'risk' it and were pleased to have done so. No queues and a pleasant short trip - free of charge, surprisingly.
The ferry runs on a twenty minute schedule for most of the day, but the times can readily be found on-line.

This was a memorable en route stopover and it is locked into my systems for future reference.
I cannot speak too highly of it.
Enjoy!!

Room Tip: I wouldn't worry about it!

Francoise was absolutely lovely, she does not speak English but is very patient and explains everything by showing you. The bed was comfy and the room was pristine. The bathroom was fantastic with plenty of space. The location is just outside Jumieges and is perfectly beautiful and quiet.

Francoise served a beautiful breakfast, you want for nothing it was delicious and homemade and just wonderful. We made some great friends at breakfast and we were sorry to leave. We will definitely return here :)

“Fantastic value and delicious food”

This B&B is located away from the centre of Jumieges and its famous abbey, in a quiet spot surrounded by neighbours' gardens. It is a recently constructed purpose-built home but built in the classic Normandy half-timbered style, like its neighbours. It's in strolling distance of a small bar/bistro if you don't take the table d'hotes dinner and don't want to drive for a meal - but you may regret that choice!

Our room was upstairs, accessed by steep stairs whether you use the internal or external ones, so take care if you have large cases. The room itself, while compact and with some sloping ceilings, contained everything you would need for a night or two, bright lighting - not necessarily a given in France! - and a comfy bed. It even included the makings of tea or coffee - again, not common in French B&Bs. The bathroom was well equipped and had a powerful shower, although the cubicle was rather tiny.

This is not a luxury B&B, but a define bargain. The location is ideal for not just Jumieges' famous abbey but to see much of the Normandy countryside, and for a visit to neighbouring Rouen, one of France's more delightful towns, steeped in history and culture.

Francoise was very helpful hostess, friendly, welcoming and charming, happy to chat to her guests when not busy. When she offered us info on the area, shewas delighted to know it was an area we knew well and had already expored over several visits, but accepted instead our challenge to find a market in a neighbouring village where we could buy the local cheeses, and came up trumps. However, it's Francoise's cooking perhaps that makes staying here such a wonderful experience. As we opted for the table d'hotes evening meal, we were treated to a delicious 4 course dinner of local, seasonal ingredients, washed down with a regional aperitif and wine. Breakfast the next morning was another triumph - a classic French breakfast - enhanced by home made preserves, fresh fruit, cold cuts, etc. You get your cafe au lait served French-style in a large bowl with space to dunk your bread and pastries, and an opportunity to chat to fellow guests.

While we were totally happy with our stay, I'd point out 2 possible issues to prospective guests: Firstly, I don't get the impression Francoise speak much if any English, but another guest said she understands enough to respond to email enquiries. Secondly, as it is a compact B&B, there is no lounge area where fellow travellers can meet and chat - at those prices, not so unusual.
