“Thourougly relaxed and spoilt”

We have just returned from one of the very best holidays we have ever had.

Unusually we chose to stay for two weeks and did not regret our decision for one moment.

Set in the most peaceful setting in a small village Les Fontaines proved to be the ideal choice for some proper exploration of Normandy. Plenty to visit and if you choose to eat out many good places to eat within 15 mins drive.

If you decide to let Andrew spoil you with his super skills when driving the stove you will only be amazed and entertained.
You will want for nothing and can only be charmed by your wonderful hoasts and their fantastic house.

A car and a supply of hangover cures are really all you need!
Fantastic.

“Chambre d'hotes par excellence in Normandy”

Stayed here for two nights in August. The weather was awful, damp and cold but the experience of Les Fontaines cheered us no end.
Our host, Andrew, proved both nonchalant and humourous in providing both excellent and generous (5 course) dinners and breakfasts. Evening meals were taken with all the guests at one large dining table which enabled good conversation throughout.
The rooms had comfortable beds and were a good size (helped by high ceilings and ,when it wasn't raining, nice views of the gardens) and the en-suite facilities worked very well. The rooms cost €65 for double occupancy inc breakfast. Dinner was €25 each (inc drinks) and was excellent value.
All this must end soon as the house is up for sale and Andrew is moving on to other pastures.

“Home away from home, hidden away in Basse-Normandie”

We stayed at Les Fontaines for three nights and loved our room, the garden, but above all what the French call "an accueil chaleureux", since the English owners where attentive way beyond the call of duty. In particular, breakfast surpassed all our expectations (especially so since we have quite a bit of experience with French petit déjeuners). We also had two wonderful dinners there - highly recommended as well!

“Wonderful B&B!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2007

We stayed at Les Fontaine for three nights and loved every minute. The location is near Caen and central to just about everything you want to do while in Normandy. The house and gardens are beautiful and the hosts were great. Andrew is an excellent cook and quite a character.

When we visited they were in the process of selling the B&B but we hope that the new owners will maintain the charm of this lovely home. We highly recommend staying here if you are planning a visit to Normandy.

“A lovely country home close to Caen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2006

Les Fontaines is located in the lovely town of Barbery, a 15 minute drive south of Caen. The property has a lovely garden, chestnut trees, and a charming country house. Andrew, our gracious and humourist host, is a transplanted Brit who's been living in France for the past 16 years.

We stayed in a huge room with lovely antique furniture and a great view to the back side of the property. The breakfasts were wonderful. Lots of fresh croissants and other baked goods, homemade preserves, cereals, yoghurt, orange juice, and great coffee.

The drive from Barbery to Caen is a pleasant one. We passed through and by other working/living towns with houses dating back hundreds of years.

As Canadians, our primary goal to Normandy was to visit the WW2 beaches and other related historical spots. Les Fontaines is a short drive (about 40 min) to Juno Beach and the Canadian Juno Beach Centre. The centre is rich in WW2 history and well worth a visit no matter which allied country you're from. The other WW2 beaches are also close by (+/- 10 min) . There's a well maintained Canadian Military Cemetary just 10 minutes from Les Fontaines on the way to Caen.

Dieppe, Bayeaux and Mont St Michel are also close enough from Les Fontaines to make them as day trips.

Lastly, make sure you stay for Andrew's fabulous home cooked dinners. We were served one evening a sumptuous 4-course dinner, coffee and wine for a very reasonable price of $26Euros each. Ask him which night he's not cooking and eat in Caen instead.

We think Les Fontaines makes a lovely base for any Normandy visit.
