“Friendly, extremely helpful staff and good free wi-fi access.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

This hotel is lovely and the staff incredibly helpful and welcoming. It's very good value, with free wi-fi internet access, but would benefit from having bedside lamps, an information pack in the rooms, hooks/rail to hang dressing gown on in the bathroom. We stayed in the annexe and would have paid £10 extra for a superior room if one had been available in the main section of the hotel, but it was fully booked so we had to stay in our small room which was however reasonably comfortable and clean. The place would benefit from a bit of sound-proofing but as it seems to attract mainly middle-aged clients, it isn't too much of a problem. The doors could be made to open/close more quietly. This hotel is lucky to have such wonderful staff and with a tiny bit of TLC, it would be lifted into a higher category very easily.

Room Tip: Pay the small amount extra for a superior room.

“A stay in the annexe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting family. The hotel looks lovely when you drive up to it. As soon as you enter the hall the area looks tired and in need of modernisation. We rang the bell as reception was unmanned, the greeting from the receptionist was warm and friendly. We were shown swiftly to our room, not told about breakfast times only how to get into the hotel if we came in late. There was no information in the room at all. It was a fairly comfortable room located in an annexe to the back of the hotel. We could hear every noise from our neighbours next to and above us. The lock on the door fell apart each time we used the door. The staff in the breakfast room were friendly and the service was good. The cooked breakfast was good quality and hot.

The hotal remind me of an old nursing home that desperately needs updating, the staff were good and not at all at fault.

Room Tip: Don't sleep in the annexe

“Lovely Victorian hotel with first class amenities. Best staff ever, great food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

My family stayed for a week at the Normanhurst. We started with a very pleasant and delicious dinner the first night. I recommend the food, but if staying longer than a weekend, the full English breakfast everyday could be a little too much.

We had many special requests during our stay and I should say I felt a bit embarrassed at the end. It didn't matter who we asked, all our requests were satisfied very generously with a friendly smile. It made us feel very special.

The double superior rooms are generous and spacious, there are massive beds and great duvets (maybe a bit warm for the summer, but always appreciated). We used rooms in the old house and the new wing. The Victorian house rooms have lots of character but I valued more the modern rooms.

There is a large garden with tables scattered over the place. We enjoyed several evenings chilling out in the garden.

Overall, one of our best stays for a long while. Many thanks to all the Staff at Normanhurst. We hope to come again.

Room Tip: If looking for comfort, select a room in the new wing. If looking for character stay in the old hous...

“Not what it seems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

On the web this looks like a really nice hotel. Part of it is but then there is the annex! This is where you will probably end up. Tiny low rent rooms that are dirty, ill equipped and noisy. Door locks don't work, soap missing from bathroom which was not cleaned and no towel rail. The rooms don't even have a bedside clock. In the morning staff put clean sheets on the floor outside the rooms....yuckk! Wireless internet was sporadic. Parking is ok if you have a smart car! leave your SUV at home.

The staff are pleasant and helpful and the food was ok with good service but unless you stay in a premium room in the OLD part of the hotel you will be disappointed. Buyer beware with this hotel.
