I'm not sure why this place hasn't got great reviews.
We loved Jukeiso!
The location is the best on Miyajima.Tucked away from the busy town. Its has fabulous views of Torii Gate and Itsukushina shrine.
The ryokan is small only 12 rooms.
Our room was on the 3rd floor and had great views.
Fabulous food incl oysters, shabu shabu ,sashimi.Nothing that was unpalatable to western tastes.Im not a fish fan but i loved the food at Jukeiso.
Dinner was served in room and breakfast in the dining room with western or japanese choice for breakfast.
Room sizes and views do differ so make sure you ask for a room on the 3rd floor with good views.I noticed some rooms were small compared to the front facing rooms.
Onsen bath was great - open 24 hrs!
The ryokan was small and intimate. We have stayed at Kikokuso in Kyoto. But i preferred this Ryokan as it was a nice balance between hotel and a traditional Ryokan.
I found Kikokuso too small and felt like i was staying in someones house and couldnt relax.
I looked at the other hotel options and i am glad we chose Jukeiso. All the other hotels are either very large or they were in Miyajima town - very crowded with day trippers. Its only a 5 minute walk to the town from Jukeiso along lovely lanes so its a pleasant stroll.
It was a fabulous Japanese experience.
And yes its a pain to get to with luggage. We walked with our wheelie bags from the ferry terminal. It took about 15 minutes stopping fro pictures along the way.But if you have heavy bags i wouldnt recommend it.Plus theres 50 steps to get to the hotel.
Dont stay anywhere else - this is seriously the best option for staying in Miyajima. We paid about 35000 yen a night inc bed/breakfast and dinner.
