I recently stayed in the Jukeiso for two nights booking it through Japanese Guest House`s (Great Website). I have stayed in Ryokans`s before and if you are only going to stay in a Ryokan once on your trip to Japan and want the traditional Ryokan experience, then this IS NOT for you!
On one hand the rooms were very spacious and clean and if you are lucky enough to get a room facing the Tori, then the view you get when the sun is coming up or going down is almost worth the 35000 Yen Per night needed to stay here (Based on two sharing). However, as beautiful a place as Miyajima is, the accomodation is very expensive and your Yen will go alot further at another Ryokan somewhere else. You are paying a big premium to stay on Miyajima and you will not get the Ryokan experience at Jukieso. A better way to look at Jukeiso is to think of it as a Hotel with Japanese rooms rather than a Ryokan with Hotel features. The food and bath`s are excellent and authentic but the property itself is big and hotel like with lifts and a gift shop etc. For the equivalent money you could stay in a very nice Ryokan in Kyoto or Nara. For this kind of money a traditional Ryokan over a moder Ryokan would definately be my choice.
I never really had a problem with the location like some other poeple have commented as the pickup service from the terminal is great and the driver was a hoot. Also you can see it from the ferry terminal and you can walk it in about 15 minutes. If you are planning on climbing Mt Misen (well worth the effort) you are right at the start of the Daishon Trail, which to me looked the best way up as it maintains a view of the Tori the whole way up.
Only advice I would give to anyone staying there would be to pay cash and not use a credit card as on checkout they made a complete hash of putting my debit card through, trying it four times before realising it wasnt a credit card (had explained that to them) when they finally got it through I was completely wound up as there were looks from the owner that I was trying to pull one over on them and they also disapear through the back with my card as there machine is not on the front desk. I have seen this before in Japan but I know I am not the only Westener to get annoyed by this! When they finally got it through, no apology was offered and the grumpy owner just dissapeared through the back. Not the goodbuy I was expecting after spending 600 pound for two nights.
All in all, nice, but not worth it especially if its the only Ryokan you will get a chance to stay in!
