“Fantastic Oyster Dinner in Season”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We are glad we read the other positive reviews carefully and followed their advice such as privately reserving the bath, using the ryokan as a luggage dropoff when arriving early in the day and then leaving late the next day to have plenty of time in Miyajima, sitting in their upstairs lounge at night. It was nice to be able to reserve a ryokan with a toilet room. The oyster dinner was great. I had never before liked oysters but I loved them here.

“Welcoming ryokan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

This ryokan is run by a truly gracious couple, located near the Miyajima pier, this is a comfortable ryokan where excellent food is served. The lodgings are comfortable and the owners are very nice people. Though slightly expensive, we had a very pleasant stay here.

“wonderful very friendly ryokan”

awesome place on a wonderful island. i only could stay one night since i was there during high season in November so all the hotels were occupied. not many ryokans offer affordable rooms for single travelers.

it was one of the nicest and most friendly hotel I ever head. The owner was very helpful, speaks great English, provided a lot of information on the island.
The food was delicious and friendly waitress and owner expained everything. 7 course meal was excellent, and good value for japanese prices.

the room was spacious, clean and had even a view to the five story pagoda.

location: not far away from all the major sights.

highly recommended. and hopefully not my last visit to miyajima.

“Feels Like a Family-run Ryokan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

Overall, a wonderful experience. We felt welcome at Ryoso Kawaguchi, and would recommend it.

Good:
- Food tasted fantastic (we had the regular dinner and Japanese breakfast), with a view of the courtyard. Great kaiseki experience.
- Just 5 minutes' walk to the Itsukushima torii gate, so you can go anytime you wish. (you can't see the shrine or torii gate from the ryokan, though)
- Even closer to Main Street, where you can buy souvenirs and grilled oyster (yum).
- Pick-up to/from ferry terminal.
- Manager speaks English, and explained what went into the dishes. (not every ryokan does this)
- Doors to the baths could be locked, for family privacy.
- Free WIFI, accessible from the rooms.
- Cosy - felt like we were staying in someone's house rather than a hotel.
- Futon was comfortable.

Not as good:
- Water to the bath was not spring water.
- Only en-suite toilet (common bath facilities are downstairs).
- No heating or hot water in the en-suite toilet.
- Confirm your menu before arrival, as they need time to prepare. (I requested a change to the oyster dinner menu on the day of arrival, but there were difficulties - a larger ryokan might have been able to accommodate)

Notes:
- ¥24,150 for two persons.
- Nothing in town after 6pm, so prepare your own snacks and R&R if the food and bath don't do it for you.

Room Tip: - The 群青 room had a great view of the (small) courtyard.

“Absolutely great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Was a great experience to stay here. It's about a 10 min. walk from the ferry with clear directions given. I think i had the cheapest option with a japanese style room, dinner in the evening and a choice of western or japanese breakfast. This is 12600 yen. Think its worth it. The room is very big, with a private toilet.
There are shared Japanese baths downstairs which you can lock and so, privately use. The left one has a bigger bath then the right one. As stated before, the dinner is really really great, you get about 6 courses, with fish and meat and soups and its all very good. I had western breakfast, where you can have as many toast as you want.

Staff very polite and helpful, and speak fairly good english. Everything you want to see on the island is close by.

Highly recommended.
