Overall, a wonderful experience. We felt welcome at Ryoso Kawaguchi, and would recommend it.
Good:
- Food tasted fantastic (we had the regular dinner and Japanese breakfast), with a view of the courtyard. Great kaiseki experience.
- Just 5 minutes' walk to the Itsukushima torii gate, so you can go anytime you wish. (you can't see the shrine or torii gate from the ryokan, though)
- Even closer to Main Street, where you can buy souvenirs and grilled oyster (yum).
- Pick-up to/from ferry terminal.
- Manager speaks English, and explained what went into the dishes. (not every ryokan does this)
- Doors to the baths could be locked, for family privacy.
- Free WIFI, accessible from the rooms.
- Cosy - felt like we were staying in someone's house rather than a hotel.
- Futon was comfortable.
Not as good:
- Water to the bath was not spring water.
- Only en-suite toilet (common bath facilities are downstairs).
- No heating or hot water in the en-suite toilet.
- Confirm your menu before arrival, as they need time to prepare. (I requested a change to the oyster dinner menu on the day of arrival, but there were difficulties - a larger ryokan might have been able to accommodate)
Notes:
- ¥24,150 for two persons.
- Nothing in town after 6pm, so prepare your own snacks and R&R if the food and bath don't do it for you.
Room Tip: - The 群青 room had a great view of the (small) courtyard.
