Magnificent Ryokan in Miyajima

I absolutely loved this place.
The location was about 10 mins walk (easy) uphill from the main shrine in Miyajima, however on arrival if you call the ryokan they will pick you up (note it takes longer to drive to the ryokan than to walk, but you should not try to take your bags up to the ryokan yourself due to dirt paths).

Our room was 10-tatami mats, with its own shower & toilet. We took the opportunity to have a bath in the traditional bath, which was quite nice too. As the owners to explain the process if you are unfamiliar. The room overlooked a carp pond & the park, and was large enough to comfortably fit us.

The dinner was a magnificent feast of over 10 courses. It was a great home cooked meal covering almost every type of japanese cuisine. The Sake provided was very smooth & we were over-full by the end of the meal. The breakfast the next morning was also a traditional breakfast of many courses.

The real gem of the ryokan is the owner, who coordinates the meals and spent some time talking to us over dinner. She took real joy in the presentation of the meals andfinding out more about us. She also encouraged us to try all of the items on the menu, explaining what they were.

I'd reccomend staying here even if its just for the dinner & meeting the owner.

Stayed for one night at Momiji-so but wish it had been longer. The location is picture perfect, surrounded by acers and pine trees with deer wandering freely by. Our room overlooked the koi carp pond and offered a wonderfully relaxing antidote to sightseeing. The food was brilliant - not being a family of fish lovers, the owner had prepared a delicious range of food including beef, pork and chicken - but she couldn't help trying to also tempt us with sea bream as well (which was good). If you are looking for a full-on Japanese experience, try this. You won't be disappointed.
Take the opportunity to borrow a torch and go down to the shrine and Tori gate at night when the day trippers have vanished. It is a magical experience. The sights are illuminated and the tide had come in to reveal the true beauty of this place. We also saw foxes and other creatures of the night who followed us back to the ryoken. Some interesting shops and an obsession with eel - especially in steamed buns. The maple shaped cakes are good.

We really enjoyed our stay here!!! We only wish that we could have stayed at least one more night.

Granny and her son and daughter-in-law were great hosts. They provided us with flashlights to use at night to go see the tori gate. They picked us up and dropped us back off at the ferry.

We stayed in 2 rooms on the bottom floor. Both rooms overlooked a koi pond and the forest. The views were great! The sound of running water outside was also very relaxing. The futons were very comfortable and provided a good nights sleep.

The dinner was awesome. It was a chance for our family to enjoy an authenic Japanese meal. The variety was great. We had so many wonderful things such as sushi, soup, salad, vegetables, rice, and terrific beef. There were many other great things as well. In fact, there was so much food that by the time dessert came, we didn't know if we would be able to eat it. It was cheese cake and fruit and it was good!

Breakfast was also good. Not as large as dinner, but definitely enough.

The island itself was awesome!! We didn't get to go shopping, but the shops looked like they had some very interesting things. The monkeys on the top of the mountain were so much fun to watch and the deer that lived near the ryokan were completely tame. The scenery was amazing. Give yourself plenty of time on the island.

We would go back in a second. This was voted our second favorite place on the trip. I really don't know how anyone could give this anything other than the highest score.

We decided to splurge one night on our trip to Japan to stay in a traditional Japanese Ryokan....it was definitely worth it! The reviews on this site were completely accurate. Momiji-so was in a beautiful location right in the middle of the national park on Miyajima island. The rooms were spotless and the staff were both friendly and helpful. When we arrived on the island, someone from Momiji-so was waiting to pick us up and take us to the Ryokan and then they gave us tips on places we should visit while in Miyajima. The staff served a very fresh dinner and provided us with some tips on how to visit the floating Torii at night. Overall, staying at Momiji-so was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is planning to visit Miyajima.

Agree with much of the positive stuff other reviewers have said - we stayed in a downstairs room with a corner verandah overlooking the koi carp pool - lovely. It was pretty chilly outside - and on the verandah - in January so didn't use it as much as we'd have liked to but enjoyed it from inside through the windows. The futons were amazingly comfortable - this was our first Ryokan experience in Japan and we were slightly wary of the futons, but they were a real treat. But the real highlight was the food - Grandma Momiji-so explained what everything was, what should be eaten with what, and how it had been prepared and cooked. But that said, she didn't hang around while we ate so it's not at all intrusive. We stayed 2 nights and each night was served an 8-course meal (I think my counting may have included the tea at the end but you get the idea) of delicious seasonal, local food, presented in a beautiful 'nouveau cuisine' style. But you won't be hungry after those meals! I think there's a package without food - don't! The grilled eels and oysters you can get in the village are great for lunch but dinner is best here - and we had eels as one of our courses anyway so you're not missing out.
All in all Miyajima and this Ryokan was a really restful and lovely part of our 3 weeks in Japan.
