We stayed at Villas Barrocal in July 2008 for a 2 week holiday with our kids of 6 and 2. The accomodation is quite impressive, large appartments that are very well equiped (although the beds are quite hard!). Cleaning is done 3x per week (and even the small garden lawns are cut at least twice a week). If you have smal children that still need to nap in the afternoon, you can easily leave them in the appartment whilst you can lounge by the pool side.
The pool area is again well designed, lots of good quality sunbeds and umbrella's. The pool itself is quite large and there is a nice toddler pool next to the main pool.
At the pool there is a snackbar where you can order drinks and food (on your room tab). This is open from 10 until 23 hours. In the evenings you can order food and coffee and either eat it there or take it to your apartment. Whilst the quality is not that great, it's nice to have the option. There is a very nice lady at the bar who speaks French as well as English. At the snackbar you can also use 2 fixed BBQ pits (BYO charcoal).
The nice thing about Pera is that you are only a few minutes away from several nice beaches in the area. Even in July it did not feel very crowded, mostly Portugese families spend their holidays there. At each beach there is usually a small seaside restaurant where you can eat fresh fish (which you have to choose yourself). Eating fresh fish is not very cheap but it's a nice rustic atmosphere and seaside dining with a nice sunset is well worth it.
Overall, villas Barrocal is an excellent place to stay and Pera as well the surrounding areas are nice holiday spots.
