“La Basse Cour”

My husband and I visited in December, and our visit was too short~!La Basse is the type of place you dream of; peaceful, charming and comfortable. Our hosts were just as kind as could be and gave us wonderful suggestions for day trips. Seeing the photo book of the restoration of the house was a real eye opener for those of us that dream of bringing an old place back to life- the work they did to realize their dream was tremendous.! We definitely recommend this grand old home and it's family.

Regards,
Christine and Charlie

Dear Christine and Charlie

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with other travellers.

We're pleased that the peace, charm and comfort of La Basse Cour is what you were looking for on your trip out of Paris and that you appreciated our suggestions for day trips.

We very much enjoyed having you to stay and wish you luck in your search for a "pied à terre" of your own in France.

Best wishes

Phil & Jude

“Another great holiday.”

Once again we enjoyed staying at La Basse Cour. Although we have stayed here on a number of occasions, Phil and Jude were still able to suggest some new and interesting locations for us to visit, even though it was late October and out of the normal holiday season.

“Tres Magnifique”

What else can we say? We have visited Phil and Jude in their lovely house 3 times in the past 13 months. The first time we arrived on our motorbike, and were made to feel very welcome - excellent accommodation, lots of useful info given to us, and plenty of banter from a couple who have put their hearts and souls into the place. The second and third times we visited they welcomed us back with open arms and we have nothing but praise for them and their achievements. They are always friendly, professional and willng to answer any questions about the area. We feel the negative review left earlier this month is totally unfair. This gives the view the hosts are unfriendly and unwilling to socialise. Every breakfast time we have experienced has been enjoyable - we have chatted to fellow guests - some more than others - maybe some guests (me included) are not at their best first thing in the morning and just want to chill, and gather themselves. We have travelled extensively staying in different types of accommodation and found this one to be a very enjoyable experience.

Good on you Phil and Jude - keep up the good work - we will be back, and to anyone reading this review dont pass this one by - you'll regret it1

Gosh - that's lovely, thanks, the pair of you. What can we say except thanks, merci, danke, gracias, it was and will be our pleasure to have you here on house-hunting missions or to hunt down that elusive Citroën "Tube" .

Hope you like that website I sent you with loads of "Tubes" - looks like you should be able to find something whether for a restoration project or in "nickel" condition as they say here. I would recommend finding the house first, though! Check out the opening titles to this video featuring Louis la Brocante and his famous "Tube" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpU5xKwVr9U

All the best and hope to see you again maybe next year?

Hello Peter and Helen - thank you so much for taking the time to post a review. It was a pleasure to meet you (both times!) and we're pleased you had a good time. Phil sent you details of the A-Z French Food dictionary, I hope you got that okay. If not, or if you've had any problem ordering, get in touch and I'll get Phil to order one and send it to you.

“sadly, a negative experience...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

On our way back from a great trip to Loire Valley we stayed 2 nights at La Basse Cour in September. We chose it because we had read so many good reviews. The accommodation was indeed immaculate and the grounds were beautiful & peaceful. To this degree we would concur with all the reports we had previously read. However, we cannot state we experienced a warm & friendly welcome & thus felt uncomfortable even in these lovely surroundings. We did try to engage Phil in conversation, complimenting him on his garden etc, but got little response from him throughout our stay. Jude was pleasant & provided a good breakfast. Simple acts - like a brief chat about the area & introducing guests to one another at the breakfast table we all shared would have created a greater feeling of welcome & interest. This was something we had enjoyed elsewhere & made the difference so marked. Sadly, it's not enough to share a lovely home if you feel less than comfortable in it.

We're sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at La Basse Cour. We do our best to please all of the people all of the time but sometimes our efforts are not enough and we have to accept that we can only please most of the people most of the time.

If we did not devote as much time to chatting with you as you wished, we're very sorry for that. We're usually very happy to chat about places to visit and to talk about the gardens, as other reviews show.

We can't be sure exactly what went wrong in your case, as your visit was some months ago and you were only here for one day. However, we do recall that on leaving you asked to pay by credit card and when we said we did not take cards you complained that you had not been told this in advance. Phil pointed out that we said in our confirmation email to you that we do not take cards, and that the price list on the room door and in the entrance hall also state that we do not have card facilities. We can only surmise that this exchange might have coloured your opinion, since we can't find any serious complaint in your review that would justify such a very low score as 2 out of 5.

We have thought about your idea of our introducing people to each other at breakfast, but most guests have already met and introduced themselves the night before in the restaurant, on the terrace, in the sitting room etc. so it is not necessary. The breakfast table is normally full of friendly people and conversation without formal introductions but we'll bear the suggestion in mind.

Best wishes
