Stayed at Hotel Adler for a week in mid September. Traveled with Exodus and we used the hotel as base for walking holiday in the Dolomite’s.
First thing to say is absolutely fantastic. Great hotel, lovely big comfortable room (with nice bathroom), brilliant food, wonderful pool/spa area. Exceptionally relaxing (especially after a day hiking up the mountains!!!)
Some finer details –
Villabassa is a pretty little village near the Austrian border. The hotel is located in the central square and so is very easy to find. We flew into Innsbruck and got the train from there – very easy – one change. Speedy, efficient public transport. Train station about a 5min stroll (although the hotel happily dropped us off there when we left. We did not ask they offered – very good service).
The room was spacious and comfortable. Great view of the mountains from the window. We were in a standard room and I must say it was large and spacious with an excellent bathroom. Very clean and warm.
The pool and spa – I am not sure where to start as there is a lot to mention! The basics – pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, peppermint shower, beds (I kid you not!), heated stone relax bench (just sit on this – you will not be able to get up again! It is very easy to drift off!). You can spend hours in this place – which we did. We used it most nights. Go in there just after 5pm and you lose track of time. The hours just fly by and you have to remind yourself that you have a five course evening dinner waiting (more on that later) and you have to force yourself out. Make sure you get a dressing gown from reception and ask for extra towels.
The food – 5 course evening meal. Good bottle of wine to accompany about 15 – 20 Euros. Food generally – salad, soup, pasta, main course, pudding. All freshly made and delicious. The kitchen is run by Helene Markart, an amazing chef. Pick up a copy of her recipe book (which she will sign) – we have a copy back home now – let the experimenting begin!). Dinner as you can expect lasts about 2 hours plus – and somehow you manage to eat all the food!
There are many wonderful walks directly from the hotel (within a couple of minutes you have left the town and are in the beautiful mountain woods and fields). We greatly benefited from the Exodus guide – Karl – who lives there with his wife – Elaine. He took us off everyday (bar one) to explore mountain tops, perilous paths! Freezing lakes (take your swimming costume – yes it is very cold indeed!!) and most importantly great company. We would not have seen any of this stuff without him. Although one word of warning – his does like the occasional tall tail - the ruined mountain hut was not the first Apple Strudel factory in the world!!!!!!
Would certainly go back, didn’t make it to the disco this time though!!! (even though I did where my special shirt that night!).
