“Awful...will never go back”

I am frequent visitor to huntly and have stayed in this hotel on a number of occasions, so I knew it was poor but was prepared to live with it for £40, but never again. Stayed there on hogmany, room was freezing, poxy free standing electric heater (not PAT tested?), bed was cold (and damp because I'm convinced it was this that caused my cold & flu following the stay. Room 8, no shower, offered grotty staff shower on landing. Couldn't wait to leave the next day, so bad that didn't bother with the shower and washed at home. Rubbish curtains don't close properly with streetlights illuminating room nicely! Dont waste your money. Shame because it has such good potential.

“Grotty bedrooms - much in need of refurbishment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

This hotel is let down by the poor condition of the bedrooms and the unhelpful attitude of management - it has a run-down look and feel. On the plus side the food is OK and bar/serving staff are friendly. My room (Room 5) was cold (no central heating) and the bathroom was grotty (no shower, strange smell, poor lighting, tatty carpet). No way would I have a bath in THAT bathroom. I didn't sleep well due to badly fitting curtains which are thin and the street lights kept me awake (bring an eye mask). I was kept awake by heavy metal music in the bar (bring ear plugs). I was given a portable electric fire which was broken and eventually a small replacement was found. I was offered use of communal shower on landing - which had mould round the bath and yet more tatty carpet. The shower was warm but poor water pressure and someone knocked on the door when I was in shower to ask if he could use the toilet! Rooms 5 and 6 are connected and are offered as a family room but neither has central heating - there is a bath but no shower - not ideal for a family. I queried lack of shower in my ensuite with manageress & her response was agressive and she offered to move me to another hotel (she must know they have better faciilites). I believe it is reasonable if the hotel website mentioned some rooms do not have showers. Coffee lovers be warned - morning coffee is weak as dish-water but helpful waiter made me a stronger coffee from machine in bar!

“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

We stayed at the Huntly Hotel. The hotel staff were very friendly on arrival. The rooms were clean and breakfast was of a good standard. We did not know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised and would deifnately stay here again. The food served in the restaurant was excellent and the service was fast and friendly. We ended up staying 2 nights as we were touring the area and thought it was good value for money.

“Dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed in. In desperate need of a facelift!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

I booked this hotel for two consecutive nights for a friend's wedding. Based on reviews I was prepared for it to be unremarkable, but I am disappointed to say it was the dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed in.
I understand it's a family business and that unfavourable reviews may be damaging, but as things stand, I would recommend nobody to book a room here. We paid £55 per night.
We were in room number 1, which smelt strongly in both the bedroom and en suite shower room, of cigarette smoke. The smoking ban has been in force in Scotland since March 2006 so either the fabrics have not been cleaned since then (?!) or it has recently been occupied by a smoker. Either way, that was very unpleasant and our clothes were tainted even after only hanging in the room.
The easiest way to approach the review is as a list of bullet points of what was wrong.
There were two chairs in the room, both of which were stained and damaged
The single glazed window was dirty and the frame ageing and damaged.
The bulb in the light above the bed had blown and not been checked and replaced.
The light above the sink did not work.
The light in the shower room was a bare bulb, as the surround had broken.
The wardrobe was damaged and marked, and the soil pipe from the toilet runs through it (!)
The heater hangs off the wall and is damaged.
The carpet has several marks including a burn near the heater.
The alarm clock / radio does not work.
There's an old soap dispenser above the sink, no longer in use, which also has a cigarette burn on it.
The towel rail in the shower room hangs off the wall at an angle.
The carpet in the shower room is frayed
The shower has lots of black mould.
See the photos for evidence of the above.
Breakfast was mediocre but plentiful.
The hotel is centrally located in Huntly, easy to find and has a small private car park.
The bar area is clean and modern and free, fast wi-fi is available (but not in room 1).
All in all, if I were back in Huntly and there were no rooms anywhere except here, I would choose to sleep in my car.

“Needs updated urgently”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

Stayed at this hotel a few nights, and not impressed. Rooms although large, do need updated.
Breakfast was really poor and basic, service mixed. Is in a good location, looking on to the square, but for the price to stay at this hotel does need a lot of work done to improve and make it near value for money.
