I thought I would write a review of this hotel as there didn't seem to be many english ones.
My partner and I recently booked the Gran Baita for a skiing holiday away with my parents. We stayed in the main part of the hotel, the newer rooms being in a seperate building which was joined by a walkway. We were given two rooms close to one another, ours was on the corner of the hotel and had a double bed and also a single with two windows in the room. There was a nice sized bathroom which was spotless and we were given fresh towels everyday. The rooms are a good size with a comfortable bed. The only complaint I would have about the rooms is my parents couldn't turn their heating down and when they asked how to lower the temperature the receptionist told them the heating controlled the whole hotel so couldn't be adjusted for individual rooms! We slept with the windows open and shutters closed so the light didn't come in.
We collected our skis from the local ski shop we had booked through Crystal - it was a bit of a walk with skis but not too far. If you don't fancy the walk the hotel mini bus is very good and will drop you off at the shop if you ask.
The food is to a very good standard - you choose what you want the next day the night before. There is a salad bar which is always full of delicious antipasti. The only thing that let it down was the white wine which didn't really taste of much - we swapped it for red and from then on only red was waiting for us. Nothing is too much trouble for the waiters - one night I didn't fancy any of the mains so asked for one of the starters as my main, no problems! After dinner we mainly went to the bar area which had comfortable seats and was quite quiet. There is another room with big sofas and chairs which has a guy singing most nights - it wasn't our cup of tea but some guests seemed to really enjoy it.
There is a spa area which is very nice after a full days skiing. It had a jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, showers and massage rooms (at an extra cost). You can 'rent' a robe for 5euros for the week which, in hindsight, I wish we'd got as the run back to your room is very cold after sitting in the steam room!!
Breakfast is good, typical hotel buffett syle with cereals, yoghurts, breads, cakes, hard boiled eggs, poached fruit (pears/peaches), crossiants/pastries .. my mum wasn't impressed with the coffee for an Italian hotel. It came from a machine that used powdered milk and left 'scum' on top.
The ski room is good (you are given a card to access it with as it is at the back of the hotel from reception) with heated boot rails and we never had to wait for the hotel minibus to take us to the gondola.
All in all we had a great holiday with great snow, weather and made only better by the hotel :) Well recommended!!
