“Wonderful stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed at the Old Rectory (3/4th Feb) and would definately stay there again..the staff were very welcoming and the atmoshphere is relaxed. We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was very good and breakfast the following morning was more than ample. The rooms were comfortable and we had a lovely garden view. Best shower we've every had in a hotel too!

“Great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Came to the hotel for my Birthday due to discounted rate. Booked it for 2 nights and made an upgrade to the room. Stayed in four poster bed room suite and really enjoyed our stay! Rhe whole suite was very clean and staff very helpfull and friendly. I guess the only downside was rhe restauranr's food. Quite pricy but nothing too special. Overall we had a very good stay.

“Excellent wedding venue!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We were lucky enough to be invited to Chris and Amy's Wedding celebration on Saturday 22/10/11. Although we only live a few miles away this was the first time we have visited the Old Rectory and I am glad we did!
The Hotel is set in nice grounds not quite Downton Abbey but elegant just the same!
The beer was good "Woods" if I rememeber correctly and the pub next door which we thought would be rude not to visit whilst the staff were setting up the evening bash served a decent ruddles.
The food was not typical wedding fayre either, I especially liked the Pie and Mash which was followed by sticky toffee pud!!
The day went off a treat, the manager and staff were on the ball without the stiffness which sometimes goes with these country house type hotels
So thanks to Chris and Amy for letting us share their special day!!

“Ok for a get together”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We stayed here in October for a family get together. The hotel is set in it's own grounds up a sweeping driveway (with a housing estate close by). We had a suite with spa bath. For £108 I would have expected a little more, the room is very tired and dated with a huge carved bed that my boyfriend and I kept bashing our shins on as it stuck out so much into the rather cramped room. Overall though the accommodation was acceptable.

“pleasant stay - food nice rather than outstanding and expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

my wife and i stayed three nights at the old rectory in wem over the august bank holiday weekend. the approach to the hotel is very nice up a drive to be greeted by the view shown in the photo on the tripadvisor page however just to the right of the area pictured is an area which appears to be under renovation and slightly spoils the location. Check in was efficient. We booked a meal in the restaurant and this was eaten in the conservatory. I personally felt the conservatory lacked a certain charm. The food whilst nice was not outstanding and was not cheap -£17-18 for a steak. The following night we ate at the pub just at the end of the hotel drive(the fox inn i think) and we had a much bigger and in our opinion a much better steak for less than half the price.
Breakfast was good although i would have preferred not to have eaten it listening to radio shropshire's breakfast show!
Our room was very good, large and spacious with a nice bathroom and a half tester bed.
wem itself has seen better days and the choice of places to eat seemed very limited however the fox inn was brilliant - not only was the food excellent as mentioned above the atmosphere was great and there was evidence of good community spirit.
we took the train to shrewsbury which was lovely and spent a day on the severn valley railway -combining a trip on the train with a walk between two stations along the banks of the River Severn.
On the sunday there was a wedding at the hotel and when we arrived back from our trip to the severn valley railway we enquired about the possibility of having a light snack( the restaurant is closed on sunday and monday nights but in the welcome information it says that bar snacks are available for guests). we were initially told that because the wedding was on we would not be able to have any food. when my wife pointed out that the hotel literature said that snacks would be available the receptionist did get the kitchen to provide sandwiches which were eaten in the (very cosy and nicely decorated) residents sitting room. The sandwiches were excellent and i don't think we were charged for them.
Overall i would say that the hotel is above average ( i have marked it as average on the review as i didn't think it was very good and there isn't a mark for good) and we had a nice stay but if i was planning a trip to shrewsbury in the near future i would probably choose to stay somewhere else primarily because we didn't find Wem to be a very attractive town/base.
