“Great location, friendly manager, dysfunctional condo floorplan”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2010

Snow Bear is in a great location if you want on the mountain convenience in Taos Ski Valley. It is true ski in...the ski out part is debatable. You still have to trudge 100 feet or so to get to the ski school lift. That lift takes you to another bunny lift from which you can finally ski down to Lift 1.
It takes 15-20 minutes to walk to the resort center, although the property manager will take you over and pick you up if you want. There is a fee for this after 5 pm apparently. Buy your food, etc at the Albertson's or Cids in Taos before driving up to the Ski Valley.

Although it is advertised as an inn, it does not have the amenities one would expect from an inn. Rather, it is a collection of units in two buildings. We stayed in the Davos unit, which is the largest and sleeps 7 in a master with queen, a middle room with queen and a third room with a twin and a full/twin bunk. The bedrooms are just big enough for the beds and little else. The master bath is also very tight and the second bath has a shower only, no tub.

The kitchen is very tight and has only the most basic cookware and utensils. There is a dishwasher but no garbage disposal. The range is electric, so if you experience one of the apparenly common power outages, you cannot cook. And speaking of power outages, bring your own matches. There were a couple of candles. Fortunately, there is a gas fireplace which heats most of the unit effectively, so you will not freeze to death in the event of power loss.
There is no cross ventilation in the unit, with all windows and the single entry door along the front of the unit. The bathrooms do not have exhaust fans, so choose your roomates wisely!...
The furnishings are very comfortable mountain-shabby style. WiFi/Sat TV and DVD were in our unit. Broadband speed was reasonably good.

There is no secure ski/snowboard storage, just outdoor racks near the parking lot. You are not permitted to bring skis or boards into the rooms. This is a non-smoking property, fortunately.

The hot tub is scary. My kids refused to go near it. It's in a tiny little room and is probably best avoided altogether.

Finally, the property manager is a very nice and incredibly helpful person. Don't forget to leave a generous tip for him when you depart. The week we were there, most of his time was spent on snow removal, but he immediately answered the phone and all our requests and needs were met with amazing speed.

All in all, given the above, we were satisfied with the unit and would book it again.

“ski in ski out was great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2009

I stayed at the snow bear in the Davos unit that was huge. I was told over the phone about the bunk bed in the kids room and saw the pictures on the web so I knew exactly what we were getting and was thrilled with the huge, charningly decorated unit. I was also told that the ski out was for blue skiers and the ski in was a green run so I also was prepared as it sounds as though the previous posters didn't look or listen to the instructions. The ski valley is only a walk anywhere but if you are not a physical person, I could see how you would feel that it was too far. Considering it is on the mountain and only about a 5-10 minute walk anywhere, I was confused again with the posters previously. The shuttle runs all day at the beck and call of the guests at the snow bear so again, I don't understand the difficulty of other posters. We had a great time and I felt I should write this review as most people that have a good time never really write reviews just the people that will always find fault with something.

“Enjoyed the Davos unit, pricey, excellent service from Paulo, bit remote”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2009

Stayed for 6 nights in Davos Unit for Spring Break. Two familes, (4 adults, 5 kids/teens). Advertised as a unit that sleeps 8, but the kids room is a full-twin bunk plus a twin. The kids didn't want to share the full-size bed, but we brought a cot and the couch is ok. The all-purpose service guy (Paulo) was great. Always there when you called. His shuttle service to-from anywhere in the village was always quick and friendly. No problems getting around. Ski-In is easy and we did for lunch a few times. Ski-Out is a little steep at first, but it's a very short slope and even I (a non-agressive blue skier) made it just fine. Takes you to the kids ski-school lift and you have to side-step up a slope a little to get there, then take the kids lift up, ski over to strawberry hill and take that lift up the bunny/school slope, then ski over to the main lift. So it's not exactly a convenient ski-in/out, but it works. Staying at the St. Bernard or Khandahar would have been more convenient to the slopes. We did not take advantage of the evening shuttle because we were too tired and cooked at the condo, played games, movies, etc. Everyone had a blast. The 2nd bathroom is just a shower and the rennovation workmanship in that bathroom is a bit shoddy, but not a problem for us. Just know that the masterbath shown in the photo is much nicer than the other. I think a bit pricey (we paid $580/night or something like that).... but then it was Spring Break.
Rented Skis through Terry's Sports as recommended and got a good deal on the price.
My 11yr-old LOVED the snowboard kids class and was gingerly doing blacks on his 3rd lesson. Definitely recommend the ski/board school for kids.

Used the gas grill for cooking... very convenient. Shopped in Taos on the way in for groceries. Used the hot-tub room (very hot!) and that was nice too. The towels were gone/used-up once, but no big deal.

We had a two-wheel-drive SUV and could not make it up the private road. Paulo came down and transferred all our stuff the the suburban and we left our trunk in the main TSV parking all week.

I rated the service as 4-bubbles only because the two maids were only available 8a-5p, and of course nobody is at the condo during that time. Every time I called it was 5:30-ish and they referred me to Paulo, and he took care of our needs quickly. They cleaned our place once and did a nice job, but not sure what else they do (the towels in the hot-tub room were empty once, but not a problem). Donna showed up a couple times and let us know to call if anything was needed, and Paulo always answered our calls.

“Nice Lodge”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2008

My family and I stayed at the Snow Bear Inn for a quick ski weekend over Presidents Day. The directions and self check in went exactly as claimed. The room was nice, alittle small but clean and warm. A cute lodge decor. Bath and Shower nice.
I totally agree with other posters the Ski in and out is not for beginners, very steep. Very nice idea for advanced skiers. We just took the complimentary van around to the main area instead.
Taos ski area is a great place for all. There are trails for beginners and the most advanced skiers. ENJOY !!!

“Comes close but flawed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2008

Ski in/ski out is exactly as previous poster described. Not suitable for beginners or cautious intermediates of any age. The location is pleasantly secluded but a terrible spot if you'd like to take advantage of the ski valley. It is too far away over steep unlighted terrain to be considered walk to for any dining, shopping, sightseeing or entertainment. The shuttle runs very limited hours at only the very beginning and very end of the ski session. Unless you can handle the ski in/out coming back to your room early or for lunch is not feasible. Forget about apres ski or going out for dinner other than the one restaurant which offers their own shuttle. Otherwise it is a drive to the general parking lot and still a good uphill hike from there to and from anything in the ski village.

The room decor and finishes are high end but not practical. The bedrooms have no dressers the closet has a bar only, not even a shelf and the only clothes storage is large bulky drawers that are most inconveniently located on the floor under the bed. No luggage stands either. The unit we were in had beds for 5 but the one chair and love seat in the living room accommodated at max 3. The other seating choices were on the metal backed kitchen stools or in the bedrooms on the beds.

The room had a very nice forest view unfortunately the view went both ways as the picture window had no window covering of any type. We had no way to close off the view of our living room, kitchen, or the only bath entrance from the walkway used by guests, staff, or the pizza delivery guy. When I complained the manager seemed to understand but I was later approached by the owner who told me that other guests had stayed there and not complained . She said that maybe "you like to walk around your living room naked". They did subsequently nail up a sheer sheet over the window, while making such a comment maybe she (the owner) was able to visualize the potential and decided a window covering not a terrible idea!

  • Liked — Tasteful furnishings. good service staff
  • Disliked — the owner, needs extended shuttle service
