Snow Bear is in a great location if you want on the mountain convenience in Taos Ski Valley. It is true ski in...the ski out part is debatable. You still have to trudge 100 feet or so to get to the ski school lift. That lift takes you to another bunny lift from which you can finally ski down to Lift 1.
It takes 15-20 minutes to walk to the resort center, although the property manager will take you over and pick you up if you want. There is a fee for this after 5 pm apparently. Buy your food, etc at the Albertson's or Cids in Taos before driving up to the Ski Valley.
Although it is advertised as an inn, it does not have the amenities one would expect from an inn. Rather, it is a collection of units in two buildings. We stayed in the Davos unit, which is the largest and sleeps 7 in a master with queen, a middle room with queen and a third room with a twin and a full/twin bunk. The bedrooms are just big enough for the beds and little else. The master bath is also very tight and the second bath has a shower only, no tub.
The kitchen is very tight and has only the most basic cookware and utensils. There is a dishwasher but no garbage disposal. The range is electric, so if you experience one of the apparenly common power outages, you cannot cook. And speaking of power outages, bring your own matches. There were a couple of candles. Fortunately, there is a gas fireplace which heats most of the unit effectively, so you will not freeze to death in the event of power loss.
There is no cross ventilation in the unit, with all windows and the single entry door along the front of the unit. The bathrooms do not have exhaust fans, so choose your roomates wisely!...
The furnishings are very comfortable mountain-shabby style. WiFi/Sat TV and DVD were in our unit. Broadband speed was reasonably good.
There is no secure ski/snowboard storage, just outdoor racks near the parking lot. You are not permitted to bring skis or boards into the rooms. This is a non-smoking property, fortunately.
The hot tub is scary. My kids refused to go near it. It's in a tiny little room and is probably best avoided altogether.
Finally, the property manager is a very nice and incredibly helpful person. Don't forget to leave a generous tip for him when you depart. The week we were there, most of his time was spent on snow removal, but he immediately answered the phone and all our requests and needs were met with amazing speed.
All in all, given the above, we were satisfied with the unit and would book it again.
