We spent Saturday night here and although the standard rooms are ok I'm glad we had got an internet offer and not paid full price as they are not "first-class" as advertised. Free internet is offered but I went to reception on at least 4 occasions to ask for the password and it was unattended. The Quaich bar is cosy and unique with its impressive range of whiskys and the service here was of a good standard. We didn't try the bar downstairs which looked more "pubby" with, I think, a fruit machine and pool table etc.
Dinner was disappointing in some respects. The main dining room which we had been told would be open after a refurbishment was being used for a birthday celebration (with guests who made a lot of noise in the bedroom corridor both before dinner and at about 1am - obviously not the hotel's fault!) and so we were sent downstairs to a soulless room which was cold. The 4 starters we had were nice but then we waited over 45 minutes for our main courses! We were given a free bottle of wine (although not the same one as we were drinking, and not necessarily needed as we had already ordered a second bottle and it sat 3/4 full on the table, but anyway...) and told the wait was because the kitchen was backed up making the birthday party's meals. When the mains arrived the risotto was tasty, and a good size, the duck was nice and ok size but the lamb's portion size was poor (especially given that you pay a supplement on it!). The last time one of our party had lamb at this hotel he said it was far better and there was far more of it! Desserts were good (once we'd asked for the ginger ice-cream that had been left off the 2 poached pear plates) - not too sickly sweet or heavy. Our bill was wrong though.
Breakfast - back in the lifeless room - was ok. We ordered cooked breakfasts of various components and 2 out of 4 of the orders were wrong. When asked if we wanted tea or coffee we asked for peppermint tea but were told they didn't stock it - despite us having had some the day before, and it being available in the tea caddy in the bedrooms - we did find some ourselves, however, on the breakfast buffet table.
So all in all, the hotel is nice, in a beautiful location and the common areas - The Quaich bar, the library, the drawing room, etc are all lovely but I think our stay was let down by firstly the kitchen not being able to cope with serving a party and the regular guests at the same time and staff (waiting and reception) who I fear are not trained to the standard I would expect at a hotel which markets itself as 4 star. My parents and other friends have been on several occasions before and the hotel has met their expectations, so either we were unlucky or the hotel has gone downhill. In fact I overheard another table at dinner complaining - they too had been before and noticed a marked difference (including on portion sizes) this time round.
