“Good, middle of the road hotel for the open minded traveller - but you do need a car.”
We took advantage of the good deal on offer and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Initial impression was of a decent hotel masquerading behind a rather grand exterior. Quiet - start of season - mainly Brits including a couple of loud mouths (the husbands) who complained about everything - the sort who think they make themselves better understood by speaking ever more loudly, in English, to the locals. Rooms were quite large, clean and comfortable if a little tired decoratively and the bathrooms well sized. Telly was poor for English speakers. Food was fine but Italian orientated (plenty pasta and fish - ok for us!) and the dining was a bit regimented - you had to be on time to make the most of it - but after a hard day's exploring you were on time! - and, hey, if you're directed to a different table every night you meet lots of (mainly delightful) people.
Staff were helpful, especially the charming receptionist who did all she could to sort out a couple of (non-hotel related) issues for us. Pool was vast, clean and under-used.
Lots of local weddings and christenings etc. etc. but that was a bit of an excuse for people watching.
The main down was the location - pretty much on its own, on the main road, a mile or so inland from the beach, with little to do either in the hotel or locally after dinner. A car is pretty much a necessity unless you're seriously into poolside sloth and evenings in bed with a good book. On the other hand with a car it was straight out onto the open road and the various and often impressive sites and sights.
A plus was a large supermarket close at hand for all the picnic goodies, wine etc.
For us, who combine exploration with relaxation and don't make much use of or seek out hotel extras it provided a good value introduction to a part of Sicily that we would otherwise have neglected in favour of the east coast.
