One of the best hotel breakfasts ever (although 2 of the other bests are also in Garching).

My room would have been a bit cramped if I were not the only person staying in it, but solo it was fine.

Internet was not free and the pricing structure was a bit weird; it was cheaper the more days you paid for, but you had to decide on the number of days of service up front, or there was no discount.

Conveniently located right next to the U-bahn station as well as "downtown" Garching.

This hotel is located in a peaceful suburb of Munich, literally just a few steps from the underground U-bahn station for the U6 line. One stop north of Garching is the Garching-Forshungszentrum (research campus) while in the other direction is downtown Munich: in about 20 mins, one is at Odeonsplatz, right near e.g., the Residenz/Hofgarten and Theatinerkirche, and one stop further is Marienplatz. It's so convenient and given the friendly staff and the outstanding breakfast buffet (more on that below), we'd consider staying here in Garching to visit Munich and take the train in & out of the city. It would be a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are two buildings to the Koenig Ludwig hotel; we stayed in the building which contained the reception area and restaurant (Haupthaus). The personnel at reception and during breakfast were welcoming and most helpful with information about the local area. Within our building, there were 5-6 rooms per floor section and each section had a glass door separating it from the main stairwell and elevator, reinforcing the quiet ambience. The impeccably clean rooms are standard size for Europe, perfectly adequate if one isn't planning to spend all day in them. The furniture in ours was slightly worn but functional. The bathroom appeared to have been recently renovated: it had high-end fixtures and beautiful sand-colored tiles.

The breakfast buffet was a true highlight: delicious local breads and rolls, eggs, a variety of meats and cheeses, fruit juices, fresh vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers, sometimes smoked salmon and caviar, platters of sectioned fresh fruit (melons, pineapple, kiwi, oranges, grapefruit and so on), and incredible granolas and yogurts along with a selection of toppings like almonds, hazelnuts, and dried fruit. Everything is artistically presented, with delightful garnishes, from sprigs of fresh herbs to prettily-arranged fruit peels or carved sections of melon rinds. There was also a juice machine, where presumably one could create their own juice from a custom combination of the available fruits and vegetables. Coffee and hot chocolate were served to order and the selection of hot teas was fantastic, a different one everyday, presented in a small pot with sides of fresh lemon wedges and large, dark sugar crystals. The hotel has a restaurant called Letoon, specializing in Ottoman Empire cuisine; we didn't have an opportunity to try it but hope to next time.

If you plan to use public transportation, just a couple more notes. In the evening coming back out of Munich, not every U6 train goes all the way out to Garching. Either watch the signs at the train station and on the front of the train and choose one that does go to Garching or, take the U6 that goes part-way (to Froettmanig) and get out there and wait for the next U6 to go the rest of the way. And, there is no direct train connection to/from the airport to Garching. One can take a train from the airport into Ismaning and from there catch a bus over to Garching. When we were there, the first bus on Saturday morning left Garching for Ismaning at just after 9, so this wouldn't work if one had an early flight out of Munich). Given our luggage, we decided on a taxi: cost without tip was 35 Euros in fall 2009 and travel time was less than half an hour.

Very clean rooms, excellent breakfast. Right next to the train station, but not at all noisy.

Very good service, staff very accomodating. I got upgraded to a suite because I arrived too early.

Beds are nice and hard, internet is fast. I was told I would pay 5 euros a night for the internet, but ended up not having to pay.

Breakfast had excellent cereal, eggs, bread, butter, various marmalades, excellent selection of fruit and vegetables. Fresh juiced, coffee on demand, and some meat options too. Could not get better, I think.

20-minute ride to the city center in Munich. So not bad even if you are visiting Munich.

Garching itself is boring, not much to write about. Try Posedion, a greek place for a good meal.
