“Family Pre Christmas Get Together”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Having managed to find a date when a dozen of my family could meet at Ashwell (a central location) and been in regular email contact with Bill, the Landlord, I had a sudden panic when I saw the reviews on this site. However we were not disappointed!
Because of a large booking for the local cycle club we were seated in a separate function room which was ideal for the younger members of the party who could leave the table and move around more freely than in the main restaurant. Service was prompt and the food portions were generous and fresh if a little overpriced for some of the mains. The staff were attentive and kindly provided more Christmas crackers for the little ones. Overall an enjoyable evening - thank you. My husband, son and I chose to stay overnight in the hotel accommodation. The room was as would be expected for a country inn. Creaky floorboards and a mix of dated and modern decor. The bed was, as mentioned in previous posts, rather tried and saggy but ok for one night. Otherwise the room was warm, clean and suited our needs. Breakfast was freshly cooked and individual requirements catered for. So, if we can convince everyone to meet up again next year we would be happy to return to the Three Tuns.

“Friendly Staff Spoiled by Very Poor Accommodation and Food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

I stayed one night in a single room with no ensuite. The lady who registered me was truly welcoming.

My room was small and the bed was very uncomfortable; I imagine the mattress was well over 20 years old.
The accommodation areas were tired and the carpet was disgustingly filthy.

Dinner was wholesome food but was overpriced. Breakfast was well cooked but served by the half asleep cook who had no interest in his guests. I was asked if I wanted toast and this was served on the same plate as the poached eggs. No side plate was provided for any guest.
My stay was totally spoiled by the uncomfortable bed and was a pity because the lady who registered me was very helpful, attentive and polite.
I would not stay again. Very expensive experience.

“Dreadful food, keep clear!”

Have patronised this pub for many years with great satisfaction. Visited in September 2011 and the sickly food and slovenly staff made the occasion horrid. It was a very disappointing experience. The staff behind the bar were discussing naked men featured on a TV programme in considerable detail and when asked about the red wines available admitted to not being able to pronounce them.
The meat was tough the mash potatoes lumpy with a few peas floating in a sea of cream. My friend left most of his steak and kidney pie (unheard of!)
I complained discretely to the bar staff who passed my comments to the chef. However there was no indication that our feed back was heeded or even mattered. We were charged the full amount and had no communication with the chef. I just wish we had paid what we felt the meal was worth. The best we can do now is to warn others.

Ashwell is an idyllic village and in desperate need for a good eatery and this is not IT.

It was interesting reading previous reviews and staggering that the pub carries on with bad service and appalling food regardless!.

“bad attitude and poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

Every time we go to London we used to stop in Ashwell on the way back to Cambridge to have lunch in Three Tuns. When we first strated going there 5-6 years ago it was a very smart gastro pub with immaculately trained staff and great food. But not any more, I’m afraid. The food is still ok but I agree with other reviewers here that vegetables are usually half raw and generally unappetising and I would definitely stay clear of their roasts. Last time we came for lunch, the pub was half empty yet the manager said they were full and offered us the smallest table near the door. Fortunately there was only two of us so it didn’t matter. He then went out of his way to point out that he’ll be taking our order only after the other table put theirs in because they booked and we didn’t. I wasn’t really paying attention to all this until I overheard him moaning to his bar staff how outrageous it is that people just roll up without booking. You don’t need to book in Jamie Oliver’s restaurant in the centre of Cambridge, why on earth would you need to book for lunch in some pub in the middle of nowhere (apologies to Ashwell residents)! We won’t be going there for lunch anymore.

“Poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

We booked the room at the back for a family meal, and because there were so many of us they asked us to phone through the food orders in advance. My partner and I were running a few minutes late because we'd had a 2hr journey, and were there within 15mins of the time the table had been booked for, but the staff brought our starters out before we'd even arrived! They then brought out the main course while we were still eating our starters! And when my partner went up to ask to pay for our meals, the guy behind the bar was beyond rude. He tried to get us to pay for the entire £200 meal because he didn't want to split it, and when my partner tried to explain that we just wanted to pay for our food she was handed a calculator and told to work it out for herself. No attempt to be polite, helpful or any degree of customer service.
The food itself was fine for the price, not outstanding but nothing to complain about. If only the customer service hadn't been so poor! It made me pleased we weren't staying at the hotel...
