Great hotel for the price. Would not want to pay full price during high season.
We went the last week of October and the hotel was very quiet. Temperature was about 87 degrees and partly cloudy. If it did rain, only for a minute and cleared up again. The hotel is at the base of the rainforest and the cloud formations that come across are amazing. That time of year it gets dark at 6pm.
Location: Secluded. Comfortable. So close to the rainforest. The pools are wonderful. Adult pool was very relaxing. At night we would slip into the pool after dinner and had the pool to ourselves. No one said a thing to us. In the morning before breakfast you can take long walks on the beach!! The ocean was enjoyable too.. get out beyond the crash of wave and the water was not crystal clear.. but clear enough. At your feet are tons and tons of live sand dollars!
Food: Our stay came with breakfast buffet. Mon - Wed they didn't have enough people to have the buffet but you could order what you wanted off the menu instead. It wasn't exactly perfect as you couldn't choose a little of this or that.. but they made it work. Otherwise food and drinks were expensive. We stopped off at the grocery on the way in to purchase alcohol, wine, soda's, water and plastic glasses. Bring a collapsible cooler on the top of your suitcase and you have everything you need.
Rooms. Beds are very comfortable. Floors are tile and clean. Towels are nice white and fluffy. Keep your sliding glass door closed or the rooms get super humid. Rooms are quiet. You don't hear any noise from your neighbors.
Restaurants. The hotel has lots of options for nearby restuarants who will come and pick you up at the hotel and bring you back. Richey's and the Hacienda were just 2. Richey's has an amazing view overlooking the hotel from the mountains. The Hacienda has the best flank steak by far! Prices were pretty reasonable for eating out in a "nicer" Puerto Rican restaurant. We were a mix of locals and tourists. Certainly LaParilla at the Loquido Kiosks was by far our favorite. Get the coconut shrimp! Yum!! I ate them twice!!
Get a car and a good map. We used the Map, GPS and the concierge provides fabulous typed up directions to anywhere you may want to go! Driving was fine if one person is good at navigating.
We loved Culebra and managed to take the ferry ourselves. It was super easy. The ferry is a nice hour ride on the water and the cove on Culebra is breath taking.
Rio Camuy caves by far everyone's favorite. Amazing. They operate on Puerto Rico time so don't be in a rush. We waited over an hour for the tour to start (10 min they said) and it was worth it.
Arciebo Observatory can be done on the way to the caves. It was interesting but the telescope part was a little disappointing. It was not as shiny as one would guess. Overall the visit was worthwhile. Tip. If you have someone that cannot walk up the hill, they will send a car down to get you and save you the hike up and down a bunch of stairs in the heat.
Ponce. We drove over to the dry forest. It was interesting to see the contrast to the tropical side. This drive confirmed that we picked the right place to stay!
El Yunque. We had a great tour of the rainforest. Ideal is to hike DOWN to the waterfall. Seriously. They tell you to hike up from Big Tree. It is so much easier to hike DOWN from La Mina.
Guavate. We wanted to eat roasted pork so we headed here after a morning tour of the Barcardi factory. Yum I'm not even a fan of roasted pig and found the food really good. We went during the week and we can only imagine how crazy all the road stalls would be during the weekend.
Barcardi. You get 2 free drink tickets. The prices are not too bad at the factory. The tour.. yeah. take it or leave it. they do teach you about the drinks, how to mix them, the history. But don't be silly and think you actually get to go into the factory. They show you videos. If you are done with the beach and want a change of pace... do the tour. You'll learn something new.
Other comments: Loquillo Kiosks are good choices for dinner or a fried snack. They have penny slots in the casino. Join the Wyndham club - on the third night they will provide a welcome wine or beer and snacks. After joining the wyndham club the internet was free but super super slow. You have to pay for it and they will credit the daily charge to the room. Parking. Go for the valet. They are very fast with the car. Yes it is $20.00 for the day... but why pay $15 to self park? Concierge is full of information, details and very helpful. At the base of the street when you turn in to go to the hotel, there is an amazing little pastery shop tucked into the corner next to the chinese restaurant. Iguana's are harder to spot than you think. Go to one of the daily feedings at the front pond. They love their lettuce. Ice Machine... will the ice machine on either side of the 6th floor ever get fixed? Check your bill... make sure all charges are correct. We too had a charge they left on but then they removed it immediately.
If you enjoy being away from the action and like a slower pace... hanging out in the part of town where tourists are harder to spot... Stay in Rio Grande!
Overall we had a great time and would stay here again.
