we have booked alamo and were told they will want credit card swipe as deposit but would not take any money from card till after car returned and only if problem with car . they wont take money for deposit .we fly into sanford dont know if orlando int is same though hope this helps

This is one of the contentious points which is often brought up on this forum.

IMO I cannot see the reason or legality of having to leave a credit card imprint when you have already paid for everything upfront.What reason could they have for demanding money other than that already covered for in the insurance etc.If anything happens to the car it is covered on insurance so I would refuse and see what happens!. J.

Booked thro, alamo the past two years, My feeling is

they will always try and get you to take a bigger

car also extra insurance. They will make you feel like they,r doin you a favour, Proceed with caution,,

We have always used Alamo and they have always taken a print out of our credit card. We have only ever been charge about $30 for local taxes and that is all they have ever deducted.

We have always had their gold package and when they offer to upgrade our car we just politely say no thanks and then leave without having to pay extra.

Not too sure why they take the credit card imprint as we could pay the taxes with cash.

I have been thinking about this, however I only have a credit card of £250.....wasnt planning to take it with me.

Its not possible to take out an "extra credit card" and we have done Florida 6 times in the last 5 years without a credit card and its never a problem, however if i want to hire a car, like northerirish is asking, do I

A) need a certain credit limit on the card.

B) Do they actually take some money off or freeze it so you cant spend it whilst your out there?

FInally is it possible to leave a cash deposit instead??

We used Alamo last August and luckily when they asked my husband for a credit card - he gave them his Nationwide debit card - in error! They accepted that fine and we were so glad as our car got hit 3 times whilst we were parked in 3 different places - Walmart's car park, our disney hotel and at Epcot! No one left their details - something I was really disgusted at.

So we said nothing and left the car and hoped for the best - but I was very worried!

Luckily, we didn't use the N/wide a/c anymore so when I got back I reduced our overdraft to the lowest amount possible, £50 and proceeded to close the a/c!

We didn't get any charges through, which I thought was very lucky. Our car wasn't terribly badly damaged, no wing mirrors hanging off or anything like that, but there were obvious scratches and dents that weren't there before! Luckily the car had got one dent already, so possibly that's why they did nothing!

So use a debit card if you can and do the same as me in case anything happens!!!
