 Thanksgiving dinner 2009
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Tulum, Akumal, Buenos Aires, San Carlos de Bariloche

This topic always comes up, and I was having lunch at Kansas the other night and saw a sign for it, so I thought I'd post this.

They're having a "traditional American" Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday night for $58 pesos. Turkey, stuffing, cranberries, choice of vegetable (there were three options, can't remember), and pecan pie. I think that covers it.

There are two of these restaurants, one in Palermo and one in Acassuso.

Addresses:

Acassuso: Avda. del Libertador, Av. 15089

Palermo: Avda. del Libertador, Av. 4625 (Guía Óleo says it´s in Las Cañitas, but close enough)

Enjoy!

Thanks for your post, my husband and I were just talking about this. Have you ever been or known anyone that has been in past years? Is it good? Do you know if they take reservations for Thanksgiving?

I go to Kansas all the time. I was just there this past weekend. My brother in law works there. It's always busy there. I'm not sure if they take reservations for the Thanksgiving date but probably not. It's always fairly busy there unless you go late afternoons when the rush settles. They have pretty good quality American type food.

I actually went for this Thanksgiving type food a few years ago and it was pretty good but it gets super crowded there so keep this in mind and they typically don't take reservations so you can be waiting around over an hour when it's busy.

There's a secret (closed door) restaurant run by an American and an Argentine that we went to last year. It's called cuarto piso (www.4-piso.com) and the food and place were really great.

Good post. Is it possible to buy turkey, etc. in BsAs to make your own meal? Not sure I want to, but curious, as I might like to invite my son's friends for some type of meal on Thanksgiving.

1. There is a place to buy turkeys but they told me you must pre-order them. No big deal. It is a fruit/poultry/vegetable arcade on Juncal between Libertad and Cerrito. If you don't know where it is...walk slowly towards Cerrito and its on the left side of the street. They do close in the afternoons between 1-3, I believe. Anyway, go to the very back on the right side. The man that sells eggs, chicken, etc., will order for you.

2. I was at Kansas last year and the price was great and for Thanksgiving outside of the U.S., the food was not bad either. My question is......I am planning on going in the afternoon because the evening is a nightmare. I guess I should call them and ask if they have the thanksgiving meal available then. Last year they offered pumpkin pie for desert as well but they had already run out by 7pm.

You can buy frozen turkeys from Brazil at Jumbo and also Disco ( same company ). Also you can buy fresh turkeys in select shops throughout the city. These you normally have to order in advance although I would think that for a small group the frozen turkeys would suffice. This is nesting season in Argentina and turkeys are rare.

Trimmings - Potatoes, peas and carrots and making stuffing is no problem. While Argentina is one of the largest cranberry producers in the world they seem to export all of it and so cranberry sauce will be a tough item to round up.

Dessert - You can find bakeries that will have pumpkin or pecan pie during this time of the year. Pumpkin is very popular at asados, but not for dessert.

Here are 3 places that I know will be serving an American style Thanksgiving Dinner and I would think that there are several more.

Kansas - As mentioned is reasonable priced and offers the typical restaurant experience.

Casa Bar and El Alamo/ Shoeless Joe's - These are American Owned bars that will be serving a traditional style Thanksgiving dinner with the addition of airing the NFL and NCAA football games ( football Americano ) so it is more of an all day affair than just eating your meal and being shuffled out.

I recommend Kansas for families with small children and the other two for IMO a more authentic dinner in a casual resto-bar atmoshere with professional sports viewing , entertainment and drinking.

I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving

Casa Bars Thanksgiving Dinner

80 pesos

Appetizer plate w/ beverage ( pint, glass of wine or cocktail ) and unlimited soda or water

Main plate ( served by the plate or buffet style ) includes turkey and fresh ham, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, stuffing, glazed carrots, peas, cranberry sauce and bread.

Dessert includes either pumpkin pie or ice cream w/ coffee or tea.

$20 ( pesos ) in bar credit to used towards drinks.

The are showing all the NFL and college football games. There post on Craigslist also states that they will include the normal Tursday night specials of Corona beer for 10 pesos, tequila shots for 1 peso and discounts on imported tequila.

El Alamo/ Shoesless Joe's Thanksgiving Dinner

65 pesos

All-U-Can-Eat dinner with a complimentary pint or National beverage ( well drink ). I do not have the menu, but I assume it is similiiar to Casa Bar's.

The El Alamo also will be showing all the NFL and college football matches.

The El Alamo and Casa Bar are American Owned and though not a major restaurant as Kansas ( not American Owned ) should provide a good dinner this year as they have in the past years.

I have spent Thanksgiving t Alamo and Casa Bar. Several times have dined at Kansas, though never for Thanksgiving. All are excellent places to enjoy a quasi - traditional ( bar ) Thanksgiving dinner. As stated in my previous post I would recommend Kansas for families and the other two for a more day long and festive American style affair.

Where am I going? I want to remain unbiased in my posts so I will not answer.

Happy Turkey Day to all.

The Park Hyatt is running a Thanksgiving dinner special event with a set menu program.... got the email on my other computer so I dont remember all the details... it seems to be a somewhat high-end affair so expect it to be priced accordingly.

The Marriott Plaza Hotel is also offering a Thanksgiving dinner from 7pm-12am. For $150 pesos, it includes an appetizer of Caesar salad, turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pumpkin pie, and coffee. Other beverages not included.
