Will it be very rainy in Kerala in mid-August?
Is it worth going there then?
We would like to visit Thekkady and the backwaters.
Onam is the national festival in Kerala; Entire Kerala will be in festive mood. August 29 will be the onam day. That should be the best time to visit kerala.
Aranmula Boat Race on 2nd September.
Pulikali on 1st September ( tiger dance)
Onam festival starts on 21 august with athachamayam up to 29 august.
So two weeks from mid august will be worthy.
June 1st to September 30 is the offseason period in Thekkady. You wiil get hefty discount on hotel tariffs.
Jun - Aug is the monsoon period in Kerala. But it doesn't mean there will be heavy rains and the rains can't be predicted at this point of time. Most of the rains will be in June - July months. With the beginning of monsoon the nature will bloom, and you will be able to enjoy Kerala at its best. As Indu said Onam, the biggest cultural festival of Kerala is celebrated in Aug 29 in 2012. So all these make Aug end - Sept the best time to visit Kerala.
Missed one thing. Idukki dam (biggest arch dam in Asia) and Cheruthoni dam will be open to public during Onam festival. The reservoir will be almost full during this period. You will be able to get exotic views of the lake from viewpoints like Kalvery Mount. These places are around 1.5 - 2hrs drive from Thekkady.
