 Universal Studios

Hi there

We are visiting Singapore in April, and wondering whether to go to Universal Studios. There is so much else to do in Singapore, and Universal seems very expensive..... Can anyone who has already been to Universal tell me whether they thought it was worth it? I will be visiting with two children, aged 10 and 14.

Thanks

Louise

i have not been there yet but meeting with cousins from Australia who are going to the studios mid May. My understanding is that it will cost more on weekends and during public holidays. It will be cheaper if you get a two day pass instead of one day.

I have been to the US studios, I think it's cheaper in Singapore exchange wise, but that's my personal opinion.

Surely it is NOT that necessary to go to USS , especially if you feel unsure. SIN offers a lot for teenagers ( and their parents)-

Discovery Center

Singapore Science Center

Bangie jump at Clarke Quay

Zoo

Night Safari

River Boat cruises

Snow City

Imax theater

etc

etc

-----------------------

The eye witnesses report that the park is relatively small. However I will HEAD to it at my nearest visit to SIN.

I have not been to the Singapore’s Universal Studios' new theme park yet although I am a Singaporean. I will go there much later when the crowds and excitements have come down a little. I will encourage all to go because it is not only new but also uniquely the South-East Asia’s largest of the kind recently opened its doors to the public. Its uniqueness is the theme park location on Sentosa Island, which is a small resort island of the main Singapore Island, which are connected to each other by bridge, light rail and cable car. It is just part of the USD 4.4 billion Resorts World Sentosa that includes Singapore's first casino, which opened recently. Universal Studios’ new theme park in Singapore sits on 20-hectare of land, which qualifies it to be the smallest of the world's four Universal Studio theme parks in Hollywood (California), Orlando (Florida), Osaka (Japan), and Sentosa (Singapore). Being a tiny island-state, its attractions include the “Battlestar Galactica - world's tallest pair of dueling roller coasters." Universal Studios Singapore is divided into seven themed zones, namely Hollywood, New York, Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, the Lost World, Madagascar, and Far Far Away. The latter two of them are the first such zones to be offered in a Universal Studio theme park.

The new theme park is expected to draw 4.5 million visitors in the first year of operation whereas the whole resort is projected to pull 13 million visitors. Listen to what the Genting Group chairman Lim Kok Thay told reporters after the opening ceremony. He said, "we have ambitions that this would be the No. 1 destination in Asia and also Europe as far as theme parks are concerned."

I am sure you and your children are not going to miss it! It is uniquely new attraction!

Hello Louise_G_10,

Yes, I was in Universal Studios Singapore yesterday, with the missus, and our 11YO daughter, and despite all the conjecture here, yes...you will have a ball.

We have also been to Universal Studios at both L.A. & Osaka, and while the one in Singapore is still in soft-opening mode (limit 3,000 per day)and not all the rides are open currently, it make for a good day out....especially for the kids.

What is open, is new/fresh and the staff are very hospitable, although still some teething problems around the food outlets...Mels' Diner for example, where we saw one of the attendant/waiters chuck a bit of a wobbley with some customers....but I doubt that she still works there now.

It is a good park, somewhat smaller than it's counterparts, but along the same lines as Disney Sea in Tokyo..if you can make a comparison.

The Shrek 4D routine is directly in-line with Osaka/L.A....and some of the street characters (Marilyn Monroe/Madagascar) are a tad lethargic....due to the heat..?, but the rides are great, and will keep you pumped

Don't forget that when you get your tickets (online, preferably) that you get vouchers for $S10 food, and $S5 gifts...so don't lose these in your purse like my missus did, and then had to try to give them away after we left the park in the afternoon. No one would accept them, despite the fact they were free....because it didn't seem that anything could be free...our mistake, their loss.

Don't expect every ride to be open, whenever you visit, as there will be ongoing construction/safety-level-tests being performed, but the staff are very interactive, and will help you out with any concerns.

Allow at least 6 hours (at this stage...but probably 8 hours in April) for a full day of fun. I'm 56, the missus is 54, and our nipper is 11, and in our opinions.....It is worth it .

Cheers,

Rick

I went to the park and I enjoyed it! Despite the fact that a lot of it is themed similarly to other Universal parks, there is a lot in this park that is themed exclusively for Singapore. Keep in mind also that the park is not managed by Universal, but rather by Resorts World. I wouldn't say that everything is up to par with Universal standards, but I had a blast and I definitely think the park is worth a visit! Besides, you will get to see Sentosa Island. There are other attractions on the island including the Resorts World Casino - so you can make an entire day of the Island as well as Universal Singapore. :)

Thanks very much for your comments- especially to MadsDad and to SuperAdam02 - really good to hear the views of people who have been there. Did either of you pay extra for the Express Pass (or if you didn't - do you wish you had?) and how did you find the queues generally? Would really appreciate any other comments or advice.

thanks again

Louise

Thanks Louise_G_10,

The longest time we had to queue was 5 minutes, but you have to remember the park is still only in "soft-opening" mode...and total crowd numbers are limited to 3,000. Park management anticipate daily (in order to pay the bills) attendance figures to average 25,000 when it's fully up & running. I don't think that some of the catering facilities will cope very well with that sort of pressure, but from our point of view it was nice to be able to walk straight from one ride to the next, and climb aboard without any delays. In April, you may experience longer waiting time, depending on whether everything is open for business. I would estimate that 80% of facilities/rides are available currently, and this will increase as time goes on. By April, it would be even better, but the crowd numbers may rise.

Well worth a visit, whether now, or in it's fully functional mode, so do make time for a look-see if you get the opportunity.

Cheers,

Rick

The park is fully operational during our visit (except for A Crate Adventure which is still in construction). We rode on every ride (except the kiddy rides), and even went repeatedly on some of them.

The slow loading rides are Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure and Canopy Flyer. The medium loading rides is Battlestar Galactica.

I believe the park attendance will be sluggish just like HKDL. Weekdays should see low attendance of just about 3-4 thousand guests or less.

Hey Kevin....

Great to see the Jurassic Park Rapids ride is now open...It's all in the timing methinks, as, when we lobbed on Monday (22nd), it was just a concrete trough with about 3 inches of water in it.

I'm assuming you guys had a good day there, and the kids enjoyed it all..?

Did you get to have a go on the Cyclon unit..? If so, you're a braver man (and obviously have a more robust constitution) than I.

Cheers mate,

Rick

It seems I`ve got a problem with my planned USS visit. The problem is,,,,,

as my SIN event was recently rescheduled I have only Monday morning to enjoy the park. Can I properly do it if my plane back to JKT departs at 5 pm????????
