Ferry from Villa San Giovanni to Messina

Can someone tell me how to get a schedule and rates for taking the ferry from Villa San Giovanni to Messina in October 2009? Do I need reservations? how often do they run? What is the cost of the car plus 2 passengers? Date of travel is October 28, 2009.

No need to book - they go every 20 minutes - at least. Cost for a car and 2 people will be about 50 euros depending on the size of the car.

Ferries leave Villa San Giovanni in Reggio Calabria for Messina every 20 minutes.

The crossing takes 20 minutes.

Caronte runs the ferry service.

You won’t need reservations for the crossing. Just buy your ticket and queue.

Hi the cost for the ferry is 33 euro if you return within 3 days, you dont pay for the passengers.

It is correct you dont need to book but you can not buy the ticket sitting in the car while you are in the queue as you could do somewhere else. You or your passenger have to run to the ticket counter while the driver carry on stay on the queue with the car! if you dont have a passenger you need to stop the car and run to the ticket counter! I heard that is possible to buy ticket also at petrol stations on the motorway before to get to the ferries but i can not confirmed this.

The ferries run continuosly therefore the waitng time it is normally quite short, at the end of July we waited just half an hour to get on board.

I suggest to take the private ferry, the Caronte & Tourist because the state ferry often have to wait for the train before to leave and if the train is late, the ferry will not leave.

You can view more information and pictures of the ferry and the ticket counter in this page:

and also view the Gallery 2 (inn the same page) for pictures taken at the ferry in July and August 2009

Davide - thanks so much for the Ferry infomation. My trip was wonderful. I returned two weeks ago. The ferry was extremely easy to catch and we got on quickly. Everything you told me was on target.

My next trip will be to the Lake region up North and I'm planning it now.

Thanks again.

It’s beautiful to see these ferries on the crossing, but their size is mesmerizing in port. If the bridge is ever completed, it will mark the end of an era with these crossings.
