How to take the ferry to Stromboli

Hi,

I've checked the various ferry schedule to Stromboli and from what I can gather, the fast ferry leaves in the morning (around 7h30) and arrives in Stromboli about 2 hours later.

If I am not planning on renting a car while I am in Sicily, do I have to plan on spending the night in Milazzo so I can catch the ferry from there in the morning? Or is there an early morning bus/train I could take from Taormina to make my way to Milazzo early enough in the morning to catch the ferry?

And is Ustica the only ferry line that goes to Stromboli?

Thank you for any help!

You may want to consider the hydrofoil from Messina to Stromboli.

There are many more hydrofoil departures (7:10, 8:40, 3:25, and 15:25), and it's very easy to get to Messina from Taormina on public transportation. The hydrofoil only takes about an hour and a half from Messina. There are early morning trains and buses that would get to Messina in time for the morning hydrofoils.

Buses are very convenient and take an hour and a half. The bus depot is right in Taormina. Check schedules on Interbus.

Interbus:

The train would take an hour to an hour and a half, but Taormina's station is shared with Giardini-Naxos, and you would have to take a bus from Taormina to the station down below the town.

Check rail schedules on Trenitalia:

Just re-checked and the Messina route will not be in operation at the time you will be traveling! You will have to leave from Milazzo and with such an early departure (7:25), you may want to consider spending the night nearby.

Another possibility would be to spend the night in Taormina, ferry from Messina to Lipari, spend the night in Lipari, and travel to Stromboli the next day!

There's also a 14:40 ferry from Lipari to Stromboli, so you wouldn't need to spend the night on Lipari! You would arrive on Stromboli at 16:50.

I sincerely apologize for an inaccuracy. The ferries have started the new winter schedules. Let’s start over.

If you were to hydrofoil from Messina to Lipari, and Lipari to Stromboli, you would need to spend the night on Lipari. If you had an extra night for Lipari, this would work well with public transportation. The hydrofoil would depart Messina at 13:50 and you would arrive in Lipari at 15:30. The following morning, the hydrofoil would depart Lipari at 8:10 and arrive on Stromboli at 9:55. You would be able to leisurely bus or rail from Taormina to Messina as discussed above.

If you still wanted to hydrofoil from Milazzo directly to Stromboli, the hydrofoil would indeed depart Milazzo at 7:25 and would arrive in Stromboli at 9:55. In that case staying near Milazzo may be the better option. If you were to spend the night in Taormina, it would be very difficult to make the 7:25 hydrofoil. You would have to probably taxi to the train station in Giardini. There is an early train, but then you would also have to bus or taxi from Milazzo’s train station to the port. It would be too early to take a bus.

I just came back from Sicily and went to Panarea right across from Stromboli. My adventure started in Taormina...DO NOT start there. I would stay the night in Milazzo. Sicily is very inconvenient when it comes to public transportation. It took us 9 hellish hours from Taormina to Panarea. You will enjoy it more if you stay in messina or Milazzo. Please let me know if you have any questions.

It is fairly easy to get from Taormina to Messina on public transportation, and the hydrofoil from Messina leaves later in the day.

Milazzo would be much more of a challenge. Accommodations would be much better in Taormina than Milazzo or Messina, and a night on Lipari would be enjoyable.
