According to the evening news on Rai 1, there are unofficial reports from within the ENAC (the National Civil Aviation Agency) that all airports in Italy may be open by this evening. An announcement will be made at 9 PM Italian time.

That's great news, but if our connection is through Frankfurt and that is still closed, it doesn't help much. Maybe they will reopen Frankfurt soon. I really wonder if there is anything to the reports I've read that these closures weren't necesary, as the ash does NOT in fact hurt the planes.
The test flights made so far seem to confirm that. What a mess, let's hope it all ends soon.
Well, there have been some cases of jetliners losing power in all engines after flying through volcanic ash. I don't think I would want to be a guinea pig on a flight through this ash. The flights that have taken place in northern Europe were all at lower-than-usual altitudes.
The official statement of the ENAC has been issued: all Italian airports that were closed will reopen at 7AM tomorrow, Italian time:

It's in Italian, but you can copy text into translate.google.com to get a fairly good translation.
Thanks again for the updates. I guess we will watch and wait.
I suggest that you keep a close eye on the BBC web site for updates.

Perhaps you should be thankful you were not on BA flight 9 when it flew into volcanic ash over Indonesia and all engines stopped, turning the 747 into a very large glider with all the gliding ability of a brick. The crew managed to get 3 of the engines working again, but then had great difficulty in landing as the ash had sandblasted the cockpit windows.
Volcanic ash is very dangerous indeed.
Edited: 19 April 2010, 17:11We have just had lunch on our garden terrace and as we were talking about the situation low and behold an aircraft flew overhead.
The Olbia flight landed this morning at Verona airport so basically as said before only your airline will be able to give you the true picture.
I agree with others that taking a risk is something I would not wish to do.
Nor would I like to think others would and it comes down on our heads and homes !!!
It is all too easy to say they have panicked.
For once they have put safety before financial gain and we should all be saying thanks for that.
On Italian news at lunchtime they were saying that the volcanic ash is due to arrive on East coast of USA at around 18.00 today.
Let's see what happens there.
