public transport: Titisee (town)

by car the exact location plays not really any role.

I'd prefer Schluchsee as its much less touristic as titisee (no bus loads of daytourists).

I'd also prefer Schluchsee. Titisee is (followed by Triberg) the capital of Black Forest kitsch.

We stayed in the Neustadt part of Titisee-Neustadt whoch is away from the tourist area and is very pleasant. We were there in Sept.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Lakes_Railway

Between Freiburg and Titisee there is a half hourly train service. Every second train continues to Seebrugg / Schluchsee. Every other train to Neustadt. If you want to continue eastbound to Donaueschingen / Lake Constance you have to change trains at Neustadt. Reason is that the Hell Valley Railway is till Neustadt electrified. But not the part from there to Donaueschingen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B6llentalbahn_(Black_Forest)

The electrification of the Hell Valley Railway in 1936 was by the way a big step in railway history. While the German speaking countries opted at the begin of the electrification of railways for a 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz system, many other countries opted for a DC system. In 1936 the Deutsche Reichsbahn tested on the Hell Valley Railway a new system using 20 kV and 50 Hz. While this was changed later back to the older German standard for compatibility reasons, this new technology become with 25 kV and 50 Hz the standard electrification used for high speed trains anywhere where formerly a DC system was used or where no (electrified) railways existed at all.

I second the others: Titisee village is the worst tourist trap in the entire Black Forest and best avoided. Anywhere else is better.
