 aurora borealis on August 4th/5th

I have read multiple news stories which say that Aug 4th and 5th nights are going to be periods of high solar activity and it is possible to see the northern lights in vancouver. I happen to be in vancouver during this time (arriving at 10pm on 4th August).

Can someone tell me what's a good spot to see the lights without driving too much? The basic criteria seems to be a place outside city (to minimize city lights) with low horizon on the north (no mountains, buildings, etc on the north).

Here is a website which forecasts solar activity:

I leave in about 16 hours from now. Any response before then would be greatly appreciated.

This is the forecast from the above website for august 4th/5th:

Auroral activity will be active. Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Igaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Sept-Iles, and visible low on the horizon from Vancouver, Great Falls, Pierre, Madison, Lansing, Ottawa, Portland and St. Johns.

for Nanaimo, Vancouver Island

Currently there is a haze of smoke hanging over the Lower Mainland, Straight of Georgia and Central Vancouver Island from the fires near Lilloet. Lovely morning sunrises but I would have thought that the smoke would interfere with viewing. Have a look out of your plane window!

I have seen the Aurora once from Aldergrove Lake Regional Park, which is about an hour east of the city.

The information from these two links leads me to suggest Burnaby Mountain as a more reasonable possibility.

If you are on transit, there is a nightbus (the N35 I think) that runs up to SFU all night, so you could go up to the campus and then walk up to the AQ and look out over the north side for a clear view of reasonable dark sky with a minimum of light interference.

Haze from forest fire smoke is definitely an issue, but it's worth a try!

I, meanwhile, will be in Clearwater! Perfect!!
