Cancun Forum: Heat Rash? Allergic Reaction?

 Heat Rash? Allergic Reaction?

I just got back from Cancun last week, and I was curious about this, wanted to see if anyone had experienced this.

On the second day of laying out, swimming, etc. I developed an itching, stinging rash looking something on my chest and neck. It wasn't really really red, just a little blotchy. The rash stayed there for a couple of days (being out of the sun basically helped it, but it took 2 days out of the sun for it to go away).

I was in the elevator talking about it to my friend, another lady (a very nice lady I will add) was in there and overheard us talking about it. She said that it wasn't a heat rash (what I thought at the time), and that it might be from using waterproof sunscreen. Something about the sunscreen sits in my skin and just has no where to go, so it welps up. She said it only happens to some people. It kind of makes sense, I do only put sunscreen on my face (which I have never experienced this there) and my shoulders and chest (only place I ever need it-pretty dark complected). Last year I went to Florida for several days and the same thing happened to me, it seems it happens when I am in the good hot sun for more than one day in a row. My question is, has anyone ever heard of this, what do I do when I need sunscreen (all they sell is waterproof these days), is it caused by something else you think? ETC ETC. Shed any light if you have it :)

Hi, I get the same thing from the sun. Mine is an alergy to the sun. I have a perscription because it can get so bad. But you can take benedryl at night and it usually will help through the day, in my case anyway. I have never had this before until a couple of years ago so I dont know what the deal is. Hope this helps.

Yeah I didn't start getting this but just 2, maybe 3 years ago... It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't sting or itch ALL the time, it even bothers me in my sleep. I did take some allergy medicine one day while in Cancun, and it did help with the itching and stinging....I guess I will just have to keep on doing that. I am going to the lake this weekend, so I am going to experiment and see if I can NOT get the rash....I just wish I knew how to avoid it.....

Hi ..... I think you have a case of sun poisoning ....... check with you doctor to make for sure, but this sounds exactly like the symptoms. There are over the counter things you can buy specifically for it - ask the pharmacist.

The only thing that seems to help mine not hurt and actually helps it go away besides the medicine is Hemp Body Butter from the Body Shop. It just helps it not itch and stuff, since that makes it way worse it just kinda helps you not focus on it . I will warn you though it is very thick and greasy and it has a strong Hemp oder it does not smell the best.

I have experienced this. I try to buy better suncreens like Neutrogena. This year I used Origins. Didn't break out at all. I wonder if somehow it has to do with the amount of sun you are getting and the type of sunscreen used. When my tan is built up, I don't break out.

One thing I guess I should mention is I dont ever use sunscreen so in my case it is not the sunscreen affecting me. Maybe it is lack of I have no idea...

Hi Guys!!!

know exactly what youare talking about, my husband gets it when he has been in the pool activities too long and has not applied enough sunscreen. It starts as a mild burn, but before you know it it starts to twinge and itch and it does have a rash appearance. We call it prickley heat. It drove him crazy while he tried to sleep!!!! We did find a spray that subdued the twinges and itch, it contained Litocaine, this freezes the outer layer of skin that it is applied to. THis was such relief for him as he was ready to claw his own shoulders off. It worked really well. When we returned to Canada we went to our doctor and he did agree that it was a form of sun poisoning that is created from overexposer and dehydration!!!! Alcohol drinks are not included. Ever since we have followed these rules taken the spray on every vacation and been fine.

Can is white and Blue, can't remember the name, but will post when I find.

Cheers.............................................................LD

Lornadeee, that stuff sounds great do let us know the name. That is probably what I have since like I said I dont use sunscreen ( I do in Cancun), and I am a big soda drinker so I know I do not hydrate myself well at all. Plus if I use the tanning bed it is way bad just like your husband I even have a few scars from scratching it too much. Anyway thanks for the info
