Puerto Vallarta Forum: Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya (SICKNESS) Help!

We're not medical experts. All I know is I had no nausea, vomiting or any stomach-flu symptoms. I had a fever, a rash, and no energy. I never once thought it could be something I ate.

Hi ya I'm leaving for a week at this property tomorrow. I've been VERY concerned about the reviews I've been reading and contacted the tour operators last week. They assured me that "everything food and water related" was checked out and no problems were found. So I have no idea what to expect and will just be following my standard food and water and WASHING hands precautions (I had a stem cell transplant a few years ago and have to do all this anyway) I'm also bringing some lysol disinfectant wipes in case it is some kind of left behind norovirus in the rooms. Also if the food looks even the least bit sketchy we've decided to eat off resort.

Hopeing that everything goes well for our trip, will be reporting back when I get home next week.

I am definitely hoping to hear that things clear up soon. My wife and I have plans to go there in March. I am definitely getting a little nervous with all the negative reviews.

I did some research, its NOT the food! People have been getting sick in THE SAME rooms back to back! Clean your room when you get there, and you will have less chance of getting sick. Wash your hands up to your elbows for 30 seconds, this will also help. Other than that, its totaly luck. I've had norovirus before, and it has the same symptoms as what everyone is having at the hotel; it mimicks food posining, but last for days and leaves you very week and dizzy.... and if you do get sick, I recomend a bucket between your feet when your on the toilet...you will know why if you get it. The hotel does seem to be doing everything it can to get the sickness out, but they should stop being so secritive!

We recently returned and like all others, were very sick as a result.

I have to stress DO NOT GO! Find a way to get out of your reservations!

We were not allowed to switch hotels prior departure, but I think that should not be the case now. The Hotel and the tour operators are VERY AWARE of the situation there. DO NOT GO! You need to cancel and push the issue with you travel agent if they don't let you. I have details from the hotel management which say what it is as of last week, and that it has been going on since early January, at least.

This hotel needs to be shut down and should not be reopened until it has been cleared to by the health department AND the tour operators.

Very Concerned for all involved!!!

Thought I would bump this up......more interesting facts in the above posts - like I mentioned before, this place needs to be shut down for a day or two to get rid of "whatever" is getting everyone sick. I think it is time that the hotel takes this more serious, it is just not a way to spend a vacation, especially when the hotel and travel agents knows this is going on and continues to let this happen. Just my 2 pesos~

Just thinking out loud here...

Another concern might be spreading this to other people staying in other areas and resorts by incidental contact or otherwise. If anyone staying out there comes into town to eat or shop or take tours...thinking in those terms.

Back last summer I suspected maybe a bout of bad food (summertime in the tropics can be notorious for that) but this now appears to be a larger problem.

As with the whale issue, without using inflammatory language or rhetoric, just get your stories out there and get them heard. That's generally a good way to get it dealt with...especially if you start talking with your wallet by cancelling reservations and booking elsewhere.

I, too, am traveling with a friend to the Barcelo in early March. I have to tell you that I usually don't base my opinions totally on reviews, but EVERY review says to stay away. I called Funjet and he said I have time to switch motels but it will be a lot more expensive. I thought vacations were supposed to be fun. Right about this time I don't think I will enjoy myself and I am not even looking forward to going. Please if anyone has JUST returned, let us know how it is. Thank you.

We just returned a week ago,, Our friends were staying at this resort and said 30% of people were very ill. Some had IVS and others flew home.. They also said the food was so /so and after they found out about the sickness would not eat there. Another thing to remember is this resort is kinda far from down town. But they did say its very beautiful..... Hope this helps...
