Fast ferries are presenting new options to Bahamas-bound travelers this year, as a company has begun service between Miami and Nassau and another is planning inter-island trips starting in July.
The Miami-Nassau service, operated by Bay Ferries of Prince Edward Island, Canada, uses a 300-foot catamaran called the Cat, which makes a five-hour run from Miami to Nassau every day except Wednesday. The ferry, which sails in summer between Maine and Nova Scotia and will be replaced by a sister ship, carries 750 passengers and travels up to 50 miles an hour. It leaves the Port of Miami at 9 A.M., arriving at Nassau at 2 P.M.; the return trip leaves Nassau at 4:30 and arrives at 9:30 P.M.
There is a casino on board with slot machines, blackjack and roulette. Other diversions include bingo, movies and a duty-free shop. There is also a snack bar.
Round-trip fares are $119, $59 for ages 3 to 12; one-way tickets are $69 and $39. A total of $20 United States and Bahamas departure taxes is extra. For reservations: (888) 635-9228.
