After 5 total visits to Cuba, I am FINALLY getting my butt to Havana. Heading there in the spring for my honeymoon.
My fiance and I are staying at the Melia Habana (I know it's out of the core, but we are writing a travel story with the assistance of Melia, which is why we need to be there.)
We are also hiring a bird watching guide to take us from Havana to the Zapapta swamp (the husband-to-be is a BIG birder). I will have one day on my own in Havana while he birds and we'll have one day together before we head to a resort in Holguin for R&R.
1. On the day I am on my own, I had planned to just kick around the hotel and relax, but I'm told Havana is very safe and easy to explore. Can any other ladies who have checked out the city solo advise?
2. We want to avoid the hardcore touristy stuff (i.e. no Tropicana) and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any hole-in-the-wall-ish spots to eat and catch live music?
Any other tips for a newbie to Havana would be much appreciated.
