"Kusaka is such a unique spot. It is Japanese home cooking from scratch. The atmosphere is casual. The food is simple and expertly crafted. There is nothing this good in Madison and believe me, I have eaten everywhere in Madison. This is what the hipster noodle joints dream they could achieve. Don't ..."expect fancy, or pretentious, just 100% hand crafted, fresh, Japanese food. Delicate and thoughtfully prepared. Lovely!

"Dear Husband and I ate a very large, late lunch elsewhere and then ended up at MPDC for an early dinner when his band headed there before a gig at the MP Opera House. Hubby ordered a salad, I had a beer and waited for dessert time, one buddy had the pork loin special, and another had the pot roast...." The salad was fresh and just big enough, although the roasted beets weren't as plentiful as we'd have liked since we both enjoy them. Both the pot roast and pork special were exceptional! The pot roast was fork tender, extremely flavorful, and served in a generous portion. The pork was cooked to perfection and as beautiful to look at as it delicious was to eat. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate nut cake (it was a bit dry) and Hubby had the cheesecake, which was light and refreshing and oh so satisfying! Service was tremendous. Our server was very, very harried but kept her cool and her smile through the entire meal. Unfortunately, we were seated right by the host station and hear...

". . . nasty, but that's the only similarity. Dear Husband and I ordered the individual pasties. My grandmother and grandfather were Cornish, so I'm a pasty snob. Red Rooster's are very good, though this day the pastry was a bit floury and flaccid. The filling was dead-on, I could've been sitting..." in my grandma's kitchen in 1965 if it weren't for the pastry being a bit sub par. I do recommend eating your pasty with the chili sauce - it's tradition! We had room for figgy hobbin (that's a lie - we didn't have room but we ordered one anyway), it was delicious but again, that not-quite-right pastry kept it from perfection. I head out to the Rooster every once in a while, just to get that taste of (Grandma's) home.
