"We live in Lijiang, and Maya is the place to go for a nice Western or Indian meal. My particular favorites are the Butter Chicken Masala with roti, the waffles with strawberry jam, and any of their cold sweet drinks on the milkshake-to-smoothie spectrum. The tuna salad is also great, especially if y..."ou are heading into a day of hiking and want a lot of energy. It's sort of a unique dish to find in Lijiang - a cold salad with lots of protein and not a lot of oil. Nice place to curl up with a book or catch up on email correspondance over a coffee. Relative to eating outside of old town, it is expensive, but it is worth it.

"Just came back after a great dinner at Maya Cafe. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Lijiang old town, would have definitely missed out on this gem had it not been for the umpteen other tripadvisor reviews. To caveat, I am an Indian so I believe I know my food and until today I had diligently avoi..."ded having Indian food while traveling.
The restaurant had officially closed for the day but the owner was good enough to let us in and serve up great chickpeas-puri and butter chicken. The owner and his family use their home made recipes and keep the menu to a few dishes to ensure they do not slip up on quality. Home cooking showed through in both the dishes with the right balance of spices and richness. None of the oil and dry fruit nonsense that is mistaken for good North Indian food everywhere else.
I didn't taste any of the non Indian stuff on the menu but can unequivocally state that if you are in the mood for Indian - make your way there.

"Oh, how can I express my love for N's? If you are craving some Western food during your travels in Lijiang, go to N's. It is perched above a lovely cobbled square in the old town. The atmosphere is both romantic and completely chill. Song and Na will answer questions you have about what to do in Lij..."iang. Favorite things on the menu: American Breakfast, Tuna Melt (I think it says that it is spicy on the menu, but you can ask for it without spice, which makes it the ultimate comfort food if you like that sort of thing), French Toast (ask for it without fruit if you just want it in a pool of syrup), BLT Sandwich, Smoothies, and of course coffee. This is also the best-priced Western food in the city.
