  "Initially, hoping to book into one of the top Kyoto restaurants was daunting. Often, websites indicate that in the case of foreigners booking, a concierge is required to make the arrangements. I was more than glad that I went to that trouble and risked waiting. The meal at Chihana was inventive and ..."impressive, course after course of deliciousness. There were seats only for a handful of people at the bar, behind which the chefs assembled the dishes; there were also some other private rooms. There was a gentle hubbub, and the food itself is theatre at its best. Our chef, who spoke good English, explained everything without being remotely patronising. Some of the dishes were 'authentic' enough that my wife preferred me to eat her portion. And I preferred it too. Trying afterwards to recall each of the wonderful dishes was near impossible.   "we went to this restaurant on the rec of our Ryokan Shiraume. It's on a main road, but difficult to find if you do not read japanese (ask for help). The setting is lovely, seats mabe only about 15 people or so, very personable space and the food is delicious. definitely go for the wasabi mayonnai..."se crusted shrimp!
