Living in Portland, this is one of my favorite haunts!! Each weekend I find myself walking into Standard Bakery for one amazing treat and find myself walking out of the bakery with three amazing treats as I can't make a decision.
The Pain au Chocolate, is truly absolutely amazing and a staple in my diet. Other of their fantastic treats...

The fruit buckle was very good. My husband had a blueberry scone which he said was good and a croissant which was so so. The breads looked good but we didn't try them. Also didn't try the coffee because there was nowhere to sit.
Everything looked and smelled appetizing, and the employees were very pleasant and efficient. Of the five items I tried, the morning bun was my least favorite. The syrup on top was cloyingly sweet and sticky. The pain au chocolat and chocolate-chocolate chip cookie were fine but not worth a special trip. The apricot galette was more a shortbread hockey puck...

I chose the breakfast bun, which is a sticky bun anywhere else, and a blueberry scone for breakfast. The bun was good but the scone lacked any real berry flavor. Their coffee was very good.
Whenever we drive to mid coast, we take a detour to stop at Standard. It's one of the few places that outdoes our home-baked, no-knead bread. The whole wheat sour dough (or country whole wheat ?) is crunchy outside and sufficiently substantial inside--not too doughy or too light. The baguette is flaky and parallels the best anywhere, including France.

Gosh after all the great reviews I feel like Debbie Downer. I love the location of the bakery directly across from the ferry terminal in an attractive old building. It is a simple counter where you order and some benches in front. Selection was very limited when we were there. The baguette was very average and a little dry (maybe...

I wish all bakeries are as good as Standard Baking Co. I travel to Portland ME every so often and look forward to their morning buns, croissants, chocolate corks and sables (cookies). Locals and visitors alike line up when the doors open each morning. The bread is excellent and is served at many local restaurants. That's how good it is!
small, simple storefront with daily variety of baked goods. bakeries really just don't get any better than this. everything they put out is excellent and worth going out of your way for. some highlights include the best ever baguette, raisin pecan loaf, morning bun w nuts, almond croissant, the best ever scones, galettes, chocolate corks. you can't miss.
I've purchased bread, cookies, and pastries from this bakery many times. I have never been disappointed. Their buckles are so fresh, full, of fruit, and make a wonderful breakfast treat.
