What a dining treat! The Irondale Café beside the railroad tracks in Irondale, Alabama, is worth leaving the Interstate and driving the several blocks to the restaurant. The Irondale claims to be a model for the Whistle Stop Café in the Fannie Flagg book and later motion picture “Fried Green Tomatoes.” With that in mind, we did not ask for... More

Yes, it's also known as the Whistle Stop Cafe, and it is famous for its fried green tomatoes, and justifiably so. But at its core, the Irondale Cafe, is not that terribly different from hundreds of other meat-and-three cafeteria-style restaurants in almost every town and city in the South, as well as the Midwest. Having said that, the cafe has... More

Irondale Cafe is all it is cracked up to be. Very nice folks, great food and even a little down-home atmosphere. The fried green tomatoes are clearly the best I've ever eaten, but the fried chicken and other veggies were great, too. No, meat-and-three is no longer a $3.99 lunch, but I'll pay $8.00 or so to eat here rather... More

This is a great road food cafe!! We have stopped there before and the food has always been excellent. Fried chicken, all kinds of southern veggies and pies that melt in your mouth. Not too expensive also. If you are close to the airport, it's worth the 4 mile drive to Irondale. As you probably know this was where "Fried... More

2nd trip back here - will come everytime in the Birmingham area. LOVE the fried green tomatoes and mac cheese! Hubby loved the gumbo (ordered it w/o rice - that is an option). Iced tea was good. I heard the stewed squash was sweetend with something like brown sugar from someone at our table. Our UK relative even really liked... More

Ok, this is the restaurant also known as The Whistle Stop Cafe (in the Movie Fried Green Tomatoes). I have not had good fried green tomatoes in a while and these were AWESOME! My Mac cheese was soooo very yummy! My daughter said the chicken fingers were the "best in the Universe". Now I have another favorite restaurant in the... More

After driving 2 hours to specifically eat at this restaurant....Walked in, greeted by no one. The gentleman assisting with our order was very nice but seemed hurried, though no one was behind us. The waitress was very pleasant but seemed overwhelmed, though there were hardly any customers there. The food was mediocre. It was supposed to be traditional southern cooking... More

We visited the Irondale Cafe on a Friday at lunch. There was a great selection of meats, vegetables and desserts. Some items were a bit overcooked and greasy. Overall, it just didn't meet our expectations. We did try the fried green tomatoes which are one of their signature dishes. They were good but definitely weren't the best we've ever had.... More
