Good service, limited but very nice lunch menu. Reasonable prices. One block off the town square. Go - enjoy it.
Visiting a girlfriend at her lake house at Lake Athens for a couple of days and we dropped into The Railway Café in downtown Athens. Great atmosphere. Delicious menu variety. Family owned and ran. Cheerful, attentive wait staff. Everything is freshly prepared and tasty. Worth going out of your way if you are in the area.
We were amazed to find this place in a small Texas town like Athens - it felt like something from Boulder, CO near where we live. Everything was just perfect. The menu, decor, prices, atmosphere, service and the food itself were all just spot on. Someone's vision is being realized here and it's a classy and creative one. How they... More
I always eat at locally owned restaurants when I travel, and the Railroad Cafe in Athens is a great find. Neat old building, delicious food, great service. I had a pulled pork BBQ pizza and it was amazing. Highly recommended!
The Railway Cafe is located in the downtown area of the small town of Athens, Texas about 90 minutes from the Dallas Airport. It is only open for lunch and if you are going to be anywhere near Athens it is worth a stop. They use as much locally grown ingredients as possible and have a well thought out lunch... More
Really good chef quality food. A lot of healthy things, but I ordered a bacon avocado cheeseburger that was the best I've ever had! Everyone at a table of 7 loved their entrees! Not cheap, but quality never is. Not too expensive either. Loved it.
The Railway Cafe offers a great menu selection and great service. My only negative comment it that it is a weekday/lunch only restaurant. I wish it were open for dinner. If you are in Athens, you must make plans to eat there!!
We travel from Nashville to Austin several times a year and like to take the east Texas back roads. We discovered the Railway Cafe looking for a local place to try. The ingredients are fresh, the choices are limited but excellent, and the food is both delicious and lovely to see. On our first trip we had a heirloom tomato... More
It is a shame this place is only open at lunch and during the week. The food is great and the chef is very creative. The lunch seafood special was trout and mixed vegetables. The trout was grilled perfectly served over mixed vegetables of brussel sprouts, tomatoes, mushrooms and potatoes. The cider vinaigrette is perfect over the mixed salad with... More
Easy to see why this is #1 in Athens. The Chef is classically trained and his dishes reflect that. Some might fault the atmosphere--it's an old railroad building but I found it historic and fun to be in. Vegetables are uniquely used and the pickles are the best I've ever eaten. This was a great experience.
