Omen restaurant was recommend in our guide book and I am so happy we decided to stop there post our visit of Ginkakuji. The place seems very popular, even at the slightly later lunch hour when we arrived. There's floor seating on tatami mats on the ground floor and table seating on the top. We got a table on the... Felt like a very local, authentic place to eat but helpful instructions in English on how to enjoy the cold or hot noodles. Enough variety but not overwhelming menu.

Lovely house close to Ginkaku-ji. Classic interior, with a tatami mats and a bar area, with a reassuringly large local crowd (given its in guidebooks and close to a main temple). Simple noodles, hot broth, 7 vegetables and sesame, all delicious when mixed together. Good value, prompt service and recommended if in the area.

This places offers what seems like regular udon noodles, but they arent. Apart from the beauty of the plates when they are served, they are remarkably tasty. I like udon everywhere, but this place has something special- the delicious vegetables, the sesame, the noodles served separately from the broth - something about all of it together is just delicious. We were seated upstairs and had lovely service. The food was delicious and each dish memorable. I still think of the persimmon salad with green tea leaves and tofu dressing. Helpful staff for non-Japanese speakers.

Expensive but worth it. Chilled udon with the freshest tastiest vegetables imaginable. Dark classic interior. Friendly staff.

While all the reviews suggested we should be ordering noodles, we found the sashimi and a la carte menu fantastic. The service was great. Traditional tatami mat set up - though you can sit at the counter. There is also an english menu. This is listed in Lonely Planet, so I was expecting it to be full of westerners, but... More

Omen was my favourite noodle eating experience during my visit to Kyoto. The service was great, they had an English menu and the noodles were delicious. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere - not touristy at all. I highly recommend visiting Omen for a great meal!

By the time we finished our walk on philosopher's path ,they were about to close for dinner. So they helped us find the way to the other shop near Shijo Kawaramachi. It is a non-smoking restaurant which is quite rare in Kyoto ! The noodles and the dashi were very tasty. It was a cozy restaurant and a perfect choice... More

A great Noodle restaurant in Northern Higashiyama, Kyoto, almost only used by Japanese but with an English menu. You can sit Japanese style at a low table or at a bar, where you can watch the chef preparing beautiful dishes with great care. We had a set Japanese menu, with a great variety of excellent tasty different dishes. The whole... More
