This is a lovely pub - so much more interesting inside than it s appearance suggests - and the food is really good, well above pub average. Starters of hot smoked salmon and whitebait are to be recommended, as is the delicious homemade flatbread. We also loved the ham and eggs, with generous amounts of very good quality ham, free... Have been here 4 times now , I have coeliac disease so to find somewhere offering such a great menu is great. I came for our anniversary in September and my husband loved the place , came again for Christmas with a group of friends who thought the food was fantastic, so of course we had to visit again on... My wife and I made our first visit to the Five Bells on Easter Monday. We didn't book but were found a table with the minimum of (in fact no) fuss. We were seated next to the log fire which, on a cold wait day was brilliant! We were informed that there would be a delay before our order could... More

We meet up with family from Colchester three of four times a year for Sunday lunch so we are getting to find some good venues. There a usually seven or eight of us and we need a three course lunch and at least an hour and a half over coffee to catch up on all the news. We don't like... More

We are so lucky to have this pub in our village, I echo all the favourable comments others have left and would add that Darran and Caroline play an active part in the community for instance providing refreshments at our biennial festival 1 June - 3 June, supplying free mulled wine & mine pies at Christmas Carol singing on the... Had dinner here in January 2010, our food was distinctly average. My green chicken curry was cold, the noodles were undercooked and it distinctly lacked in that key part of food - flavour. My family's food was little different. Now, if this were a pub selling food at pub prices, this would be a far more positive review, but the... More

Thank you very much for your comments, we are sorry to hear that your experience with us was not as enjoyable as we would have hoped. We always take our customers comments on board and use them to better ourselves. Our Thai Curry is made with a fresh homemade paste that is made daily, therefore this is the reason for... More

Came to the Five Bells on Halloween this year with a group of friends. We all had guest beers from a choice of 5, which makes it quite difficult... So over the evening we had them all!! The landlord, Tony I think his name is or maybe Darran? sat with us for a while before disappearing into the kitchen. 30... More

Wonderful ambience, lovely staff and gorgeous, inovative, well-cooked food. We've visited this pub several times over the last couple of years and just can't find anything negative to say. The whole place is unpretentious, but so well-run and the welcome really genuine. Treat yourself to a lovely lunchtime or evening visit. More

We love coming to this place, Gilly is such a wonderful host and makes you feel so relaxed and welcome. After leaving work in London it's our half way stop before we get home. They always have a great selection of specials and the quality of food is exceptional. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Duncan & Craig More
