Description: When star chef Mathias Dahlgren opened his own restaurant in Stockholm, he did so with a well thought out philosophy behind the food: that natural produce tastes are the key to natural cuisine. Matbaren (or 'the food bar' in English) is located in the Grand Hotel and features plenty of robust, rustic wooden furnishings. It's a meeting of the international with the local and therefore the menu comprises two parts: the first is based on Swedish produce and the other on foreign produce. Matbaren aims to attract passersby who decide to visit the restaurant on the spur of the moment, so the restaurant is never fully booked. The Grand Hotel has the same wine cellar for all its bars and restaurants and the list contains many types of wine and other alcoholic beverages. The menu changes daily.

We ate at the less fancy bistro and the food was incredible and we are tough critics as we love good food. In fact all of the meals we ate in Stockholm were outstanding. Dahlgren has a most creative menu and everything is fresh and tasty. Loved the lamb sandwich, and fish dish. The service was very attentive but not... More

We went there to enjoy good food while avoiding a stiff atmosphere at the same time. We were not let down. Even the vegetarian dishes which elsewhere sometimes can be a bit bland were confidently put together and distinctly seasoned. Vegetables, scallops, lamb, duck, dessert, cheese: all impeccable and not over-complicated! For complex compositions, go somewhere else. This is an... More

This is simply Stockholm's best restaurant. Today there are maybe a few places in Stockholm where they make more advanced haute couture food, but if you want a Michelin starred restaurant where the chefs have not turned to scientist who make excessive molecular type of food, but great food that actually tastes really delicious, you should go to Matbaren, which... We went to the fine dining restaurant where you have to choose one of two set menus. The staff are pleasant and helpful and we had the longer 'natural menu' as it sounded more interesting. There were some nice touches and nice courses and excellent service, but in the end it is a place I would have loved to choose... More

MD is a fine place for a memorable and unique dinner in Stockholm. Their pitch and their website and their “concept” of the bistro/bar section (not the more formal, pricier dining room) are all very slick, and create an expectation that's hard to actually satisfy. The wait staff, thank goodness, bring it all down to earth and make it real,... More

I’ve been wanting to go here for quite some time so my expectations were high. I am a bit surprised that Mathias Dahlgren actually received two Michelin stars. The service was a bit uneven, good yet not perfect. It felt like some of the staff was tired and that this was just one serving out of many, with this I’m... More

We spent four hours enjoying the exquisite eight-course menu "The natural cuisine" with its accompanying package of beverages in Mathias Dahlgren's Matsalen. A few appetizers and surprise courses appeared between those belonging to the menu, adding to the excitement. The different courses were delicious and also a joy to see, each a work of art in its own right. Perfect... More

I do recommend it. It is a must stop in Stockholm for lunch. We had three dishes and an excellent chocolate dish! Loved it all. Service is also great and plates are delivered quite fast.

Mattias Dahlgren's passion is for the produce and in the foodbar (Matbaren) there is no unnecessary fiddling about with it. Served the way it tastes the best regardless of the latest fads. The menu is packed with classics and Mattias keeps adding to the long list. Pricey? Yes, but if you are serious about food it's worth it. Small selection... More
