Description: One of Dubin's best-kept secrets is this divine Italian eatery located on the Montague Street. Run by John Farrell and Anita Thomo, Il Primo has a romantic retro vibe and a bespoke approach to simple, seasonal Italian cooking. The menu at Il Primo is influenced by the rustic flavours and traditions of Tuscany, and the eclectic and intelligent wine list is also imported directly from the same region. Perfect for dates and intimate dinner parties, Il Primo is a hit with gourmet-loving Dublinites, and signature dishes here include the spaghetti served with a chorizo, tomato and chilli sauce; the creamy smoked haddock and chive risotto; and the slow-cooked pork belly with cider poached potatoes and garlic spinach

We turned up as a party of 14 and asked if there was a table available. The staff were brilliant and quickly created a table for us downstairs. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. We had a lovely evening. Service was maybe not as quick as we would have liked but you can't complain when you... More

Il Primo truly is a delightful Italian restaurant (Montague St, Dublin 2). We went there on a weeknight during the ‘early bird’ time and had the owner/chef (Anita) and head waiter (Tommy) all to ourselves. We sat downstairs (street entrance level with only 4 tables) – lovely and intimate, but also a perfect perch to view the pedestrian traffic in... More

Sat in the downstairs area so could watch the industrious dish-washing that went on all night! While this was happening the chefs produced tasty food, the highlight of which was an excellent Tagliatelli with cauliflower. A 3-cheese risotto wasn't particularly cheesy, but fine nonetheless - and there was a generous amount of shaved Parmesan to go on top. The wine... More

I've been to Il Primo several times and it never disappoints. The food is excellent and there is plenty of choice. From vegetarian to meat, from duck or fish to chicken, its menu will suit every mouth. The risottos are particularly good, even though the last time I was there I had pasta, which exceeded my expectations. The wine list... More

This is a lovely little place set back off the beaten track which I visit on a regular basis when working in Dublin. The menu is varied and I think exiting One of my favourite starters is pan fried Sirloin with Parmisan set on a bed of Rocket. Main courses range from Pizzas and very nice pasta dishes (and again... Il Primo is tucked away in an alley near the University district in Dublin. With 3 tables in the front room and more upstairs, it is small but it is also good. The menu is mostly upscale Italian with fresh ingredients and inventive combinations. Il Primo has an extensive and changing risotto selection. Don't miss the crab and lemon lasagna... More

This was my third trip to Il Primo. After my second trip, I decided it wasn't worth the money, but courtesy of a voucher present, I found myself back there in October. Its still not worth the money. It is Italian food, but without the oompf. The basic ingredients are there, but the in-depth flavours, the gutsiness/subtleness (depending on what... More

My partner & I eat here about four times a year... We have being eating here since 2008. Our last meal was Dec. 10th 2011. Its a small-ish place, with three sections. There are about 16 seats downstairs... and then two sections upstairs either side of the stairs. We really like the staff, the atmosphere and the food. The wine... More
