3.5 stars. Older readers may remember that in the old days before the M7 motorway was completed, the main road to Limerick used to pass through a village called Birdhill. We made a habit of breaking our journey to the West at Matt the thresher's restaurant and bar in Birdhill, following a recommendation. Over the years the place went downhill,... More

Had a lovely dinner here recently. If you like fish its doesn't disappoint. Nice wine list and good value all round. I've planned my return already. Nicely laid out inside restaurant feel but not stuffy. Waitress was attentive and charming and added to the experience. All round winner and I eat at a lot of places in Dublin.

Booked this for a Rugby trip dinner. First impressions excellent, lots of room, knowledgeable waiter and fresh fish everywhere. We had seafood platter to start which was fantastic, so good we ordered a second round of oysters. Mains were scampi, which was excellent, cottage and fish pies all washed down by waiters recommendation. Not cheap but very enjoyable. James the... More

I visited Matt the Thresher for the first time last Friday with a group of former work colleagues for a retirement event. We were seated upstairs and menus handed out - it appeared to be a set menu with approximately 4 choices each of starter and main. Most dishes were seafood. I started with the mussels which were simply divine... More

I can't comment on the food because our greeting was so below standard that we had to leave. Immediately we were pegged as tourists and shuttled to the undecorated and uncomfortable room upstairs. We were told to take any table, with the feeling that it just didn't matter where we sat. The "manager" then presented the menu noting that several... More

My wife and I had a great meal and a great time at this restaurant. Although not inexpensive, we thought it was very good value for the quality of the meal. It is a very attractive restaurant in a good location. The service was also good, but the meal is what matters. We'd go again!

One of the finest fish restaurants we have visited, Mat the Thresher is an experience that demands to be savoured - do not go there if you don't have the time to enjoy the full experience. The Menu is very varied and the dishes we chose were all cooked to perfection and complemented by delightfully friendly and knowledgeable staff. A... More

I recently ate in the restaurant for my birthday along with my girlfriend and we both had a wonderful night. The food was amazing, fresh and tasty. Huge seafood menu (also some meat for the non fish eaters) and a great selections of wines and beers also. It's a lovely restaurant, easy to get to from the city centre, with... More

From the second you step across the door the warm welcome gives a hint of the friendly service you will receive during your visit. Fish is definitely the star on the menu, but there are great options for the non fish lover. We were a group of 7 and each one of us loved the food. The staff are very... More
