  "Over the centuries the Kranenturm has faced many invaders. And seen most of them off. Our enemy was the River Rhine. We arrived to find its waters had flooded the basement,the street outside and the steps up to the front door. No problem - just climb in via the scaffolding gangplank . Fire engines and helicopters patrolled the riverside and all the cruise ships were cancelled until the level of the water had fallen a further twelve feet. Lesser hotels would have given up and barred their doors to visitors - but instead Fatima welcomed us with a glass of chilled dry Riesling and laughed off the problems.
