"Bab Sahara is a well equipped camping-site on the edge of the city of Atar. It is an ideal place to start from to explore the Sahara.
They offer all the basics you'll need for travellers whether you arrive by car, motorbike, plane or bicycle (yes we have met cyclists over there), showers, comfortab..."ly beds, guarded parking, restaurant, mechanical assistance, guides, camel trips and nearly everything you can think of.
We made a guided trekking of 7 days through the Sahara. During this trip all the luggage was on the camels. At noon and in the evening our guide, knew to find a tree for shade and made a camp and cooked a meal. "Great ambiance at this interesting auberge. While it may not be very large, the owners have created several little "hang out" areas around the site, lending themselves to intimate conversations with friends old and new. Toilet/shower facilities were comfortable, even if basic.
We were served a de..."licious Moroccan-style tajine for dinner--chock full of local vegetables. Breakfast was fairly basic.
The owners and staff were friendly and accommodating.

"Bab Sahara (http://www.bab-sahara.com) is located on the outskirts of Atar, in the Adrar Province of Mauritania. The owners, Just and Cora, are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and have established a wonderful place to stay in the heart of the Mauritanian Sahara. Bab Sahara offers an authentic ambie..."nce with a European touch and all the necessities one needs: sleeping accommodations from under the stars in the open air to hammocks to little enclosed air-conditioned huts, a restaurant with local cooks, drinking water well, fully equipped bathrooms with plenty of warm salt-water, plus luxuries like laundry service, small dipping pool, travel and mechanical assistance for the entire country, etc. The site is family friendly and offers 'entertainment' for children with the campground animals, lookout sites, plant life and space. We’ll surely spread the word of this little oasis and hopefully be back again soon!
