  "My husband and I have been staying at the Monterey Hotel over 12 years now. We happened upon it whilst searching for somewhere to stay and since then have not stayed anywhere else. We always feel as if we're going home. From the very first time until our most recent visit 2 weeks ago, we have never ..."felt like strangers. The hotel is a tad quirky, but when you're over 109 years old, you'll probably creak and squeak a bit as well. Yes, there's no elevator, but if you read the main page of the website, it states clearly that there's no elevator so that should not surprise you when you arrive. When you walk up the stairs, you can always rest on one of the great chairs and chaise lounges that are at the landing of each floor. Keeping earplugs available is a must when traveling anywhere. We heard that there had been a fire drill on Alvarado the Friday night we were there...but we heard nothing thanks to our earplugs.   "Recently stayed here in a queen fireplace unit for a one night stay. Our party of four adults had two different rooms. Our room was in a separate, one story section and had a small patio and assigned parking as part of the unit. Our traveling companions were on the second floor of the two story b..."uilding. Both rooms were clean and nicely decorated. As others have mentioned, the location is good--easy to find from Highway 1, across the street from both the beach and a park with a lake and playground, and a short walk to the Wharf. It was nice, after a long day of touring and driving to have a short, enjoyable walk to the wharf, with its many choices for dinner. Although it is at a busy intersection, the rooms were quiet. Since all of us had been in Monterey before and this was just a one night stop, this location worked well for us. Check in was easy and all the staff members we saw during our stay were friendly.
