You eat at trestles and it is good to be forced into the company of others. Reception were helpful without being fawning . The alley ways can be steep and uneven and you need to be agile to survive --no effort was made to deal with icy paths . However it is not overpriced and is a great experience however a stay of 2-3 days would be ample.For those interested the surrounding snowscape is great for langlaufing and snowshoes are also free at reception .Birdwatching is also good we saw cirlbunting, snowfinch,hen harrier and hawfinch . The rooms are the original rooms the peasants lived in when the village was still densely populated - the p..."opulation has dwindled from over 3,000 to around 70 in the last few decades, leaving many houses abandoned, a lot of them completely furnished. Therefore, apart from the bathroom, the furniture and even the bedspreads are originals, too. The walls have not been whitewashed and are blackened by centuries of soot. The windows are tiny and the lighting is not very strong, which contributes to the authenticity of the experience. There is nothing fake about this hotel, it is not about conjuring up medieval times and poverty by recreating the living conditions of the peasants who used to live in those rooms, it is about actually living in the rooms as they were.   "A fabulous experience but not for everyone"
  "I had seen several articles over the past several years about Albergo Diffuso and was very curious to experience this hotel and the village of Santo Stefano. As luck would have it, a flight cancellation out of Rome in early March resulted in a 2 day delay getting home to the States, so I figured 'wh..."y not?'. About a 2 hour drive from Fiumincino Airport, easy to reach. Thought I would stop for a bit in L'Aquila but the traffic and construction seemed a bit much. So I just headed south and made my way up into the mountains to the village. This area is most vibrant in the summertime, for sure. But the Albergo was open, as was a lovely little family-run trattoria just a few paces from the hotel. I checked in, had a delightful lunch, and then wandered the village taking in the beautiful views. This hotel, as one reviewer mentioned, is not for the faint of heart.
