Casa Santiago, a family-run B&B located in the countryside beside Lake Patzcuaro, offers an opportunity to stay with a Purepecha/US family. The family graciously shares their home, and best of all, their kitchen. Specifics and photos are available at their website: [--]
I stayed at Casa Santiago twice last year. It provided a refuge for me and was the perfect home base from which to explore the fascinating indigenous Purepecha culture around Lake Patzcuaro, an area famous for its traditions and crafts. .
Only about an hour from Morelia, the capital of Michoacan, Casa Santiago can easily be reached from US cities in one day's travel. I had the experience of waking up one morning to the street noise of San Francisco, CA, and the very next day awoke to the very different sounds that accompany morning at Casa Santiago--chickens cackling, burros braying, and the clacking of a horse's hooves.
