When we (2 couples) began planning our month long trip to Alaska last January, I talked with Neal, owner of Ma Johnsons. Although we normally want private bathrooms, the lure of the antiques/unique experience and Neal's assurances made us trust his judgement - and we were so very glad we did! Our rooms were at the end of a hall... More

I was on tour with 7 other people but I am a solo traveller and one of the places that we stopped at was McCarthy.I loved McCarthy.McCarthy and Kennicott go hand in hand but there is so much to explore at McCarthy.McCarthy is a blast from the past caught in a time warp from 1800s.It consisit of Ma Johnsons (there... In the McCarthy/Kennecott Alaska and Mine area there are a few choices for accommodations and food. This review is specifically rating Ma Johnson's. However, I am adding comments regarding food choices and accommodation differences. We were so pleased with our stay at Ma Johnson' s and the very rustic setting in McCarthy. This is definitely an "off the beaten path"... More

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and saloon. After Labor Day, our McCarthy Lodge dining is closed for the season. The saloon does open at a later time in the morning after labor day. We enjoy the shoulder season as it provides an opportunity to relax in McCarthy with hardly anyone else around for those guests... More

My husband & I stayed here with an adventure travel group and thoroughly enjoyed the unique atmosphere and ammenities of Ma Johnson's Hotel in McCarthy. This community truly epitomizes the wild Alaskan frontier of a century ago when the CR & NW RR laid tracks to the Kennecott Mining Enterprise north of town. The hotel is an accurate restoration of... We spent an unforgettable 4th of July in McCarthy at Ma Johnson's Hotel. Ma Johnson's is a charming, lovely old hotel on the main street of McCarthy. And when I say main street, I mean the only street...half a block really. The town is teensy, but has a lot of pride and spirit. With McCarthy's size and remote location, these... More

Hi Eliza: Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and your experience here. The 4th of July is the biggest weekend of the year, there are lots of people in this otherwise sleepy town for that weekend! The hotel does indeed have small, boarding house rooms, and it is important to note that each room is unique.... More

The 40 mile dirt road is well worth the trip. Seeing Alaska as it was was great. Very comfortable hotel and the food was top notch. You can stand in one spot and see the whole town. More

Who would have guessed we'd have the best restaurant meal of our lives in little, end of the earth, McCarthy! Chef Joshua Slaughter, trained in New York, is a wealth of knowledge and imagination on modern cuisine, foods and techniques. It was a divine experience! and so totally unexpected! The ambiance and service added to the pleasure of the evening.... More

When I called to reserve a room here, the operator urged me to stay more than the one night I had booked because she said it takes at least a couple of days to get the full experience of being in the area. Thought that might have been true, with options like flightseeing and ice climbing and touring the old... More

A great concept for such a small isolated area. The menu is advertised as a 4 course which one normally thinks of as starter, salad or soup, entree, and dessert. This menu is 3 tapas and a dessert. The quality of the three tapas was excellent but quite small. the dessert was simply ice cream with a cherry cream and common... More
