Very olde style hotel, food fanstastic, plenty of real ales in a nice friendly pub. The room I had was in the front of the hotel unfortunetly that meant early morning road noise, this village should have traffic calming.(but the hotel is not responsible for that) However still really enjoyed staying here, ok it does need new carpet, yes the... The food in this old coaching inn is very good, but as a hotel it is absolutely awful and not worth the price charged. The bedrooms are very tired, and the bathrooms feature lots of cracked tiles and stained carpets but only a tiny bar of soap. The deposit on the TV remote is presumably to stop you walking off... Employer has deal with hotel so stayed a couple of times. Decent part is food which is well portioned and quite good. However, from the moment you step onto the stairs, the decor and condition and cleanliness takes a nose dive. The carpets are worn and greasy, stained in almost every place. The rooms are hideously dirty; I found coffee... More

First impression, upon arriving, was the cooking smell that pervaded in the reception. / bar area. When going to my room / climbing the stairs. it was quite obvious that a lot of money is required to bring this wonderful building to the respect it requires - but as it is leasehold to the National Trust - who is going... Firstly, the food at the pub is fantastic, both the dinner and the breakfast were delicious. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, but if you want clinical cleanliness, you won't find it in an old coaching inn. The bed and towels were immaculate, but the rooms were tired...but to me this is a small sacrifice for such wealth of... More

We stayed at the hotel twice in the same year, some years' ago (probably in 2002) and I have never forgotten it. Location was superb - the walks to the Caves and explorations around are first rate. One of the rooms (first floor, opposite the stairs I think), was memorable for another reason. I had one of the strangest experiences... More

On the positive side the full English breakfast was big and very welcoming and the room in our hotel was away from the road and so was very quiet. However, the big issue for us was the overall cleanliness of the room and parts of the hotel. On arrival we found that the bin hadn't been emptied and contained food... More
